KUALA LUMPUR: Private investigator P.Balasubramaniam (Bala) called his nephew R. Kumaresan on Monday night to said he was safe but did not disclosed his whereabouts.
Speaking at a gathering of about 150people organised by the Hindu Rights Action
Force (Hindraf) opposite a restaurant on Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfi elds, at
8pm yesterday, Kumaresan said he received the phone call which appeared as
“private number” on his handphone about 11.30pm.
Despite asking him many times, he
said his uncle, who sounded very formal and uncomfortable, told him that he was
unable to reveal where he was before passing the call to his aunt.
“I asked my aunt the same questions but she, too, told me she was unable to say where she was. But she did say she was using a policeman’s handphone to make the call,” said Kumaresan, 27, an IT professional.
He said his aunt told him they were fine before he heard what sounded like a door slamming in the background and the call, which lasted three minutes, went dead.
Kumaresan’s lawyer R. Surendran said the call indicates Balasubramaniam is being held against his will, and he urged the police to probe the whereabouts of the missing man and his family.
Also present at the gathering, where banners demanding for the release of Balasubramaniam were raised, were Hindraf national coordinators S. Jayathas, S. Manikavasagam and Parti Keadilan Rakyat vice-president R. Sivarasa.
Manikavasagam, who is also Kapar member of parliament, said Hindraf was giving Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan three days to come up with an explanation on the whereabouts of Balasubramaniam or another similar but much bigger gathering will be organised on Saturday.
He said since Kumaresan had also told him that his aunt had said that the call was made using a policeman’s handphone, the police should look into this and reveal where Balasubramaniam is being held. About 20 police personnel from the Brickfi elds police headquarters kept watch over the gathering.
They left after the crowd dispersed peacefully an hour later.
