IPOH: Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) will support any political party that looks after the interests of the Indian community.
“We are not anti-government as portrayed by the government and the mass media. It is just that the federal government did not address our grouses and we had no choice but to approach the Opposition to highlight our community’s problems,” Hindraf national information coordinator S.J. Jayathas said yesterday.
“We are just a pressure group which keeps highlighting the Indian community’s social and economic problems until our grouses are addressed by the federal government.”
He was speaking to the press before the start of a tour around Ipoh involving 50 cars by Hindraf yesterday to gather support for the abolishment of the ISA and for all ISA detainees to be freed, as well as to highlight the grievances of the Indian community.
Commenting on MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu’s call to Hindraf to work with MIC to addressing the community’s problems, Jayathas said: “What did Samy Vellu do
to address the grievances of the Indian community when he was in power?
“MIC has the power to do great things for the community but it failed.”
On former MIC deputy president Datuk S. Subramaniam’s statement that Hindraf had betrayed the community by supporting the opposition parties in the March general election, Jayathas said: “Last year, we submitted a memorandum on the grievances faced by the community to the prime minister but there was no response.
We were forced to go to the Opposition for help and now we are getting public recognition as our problems are highlighted in Parliament.”
