Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has been arrested outside his home.
Mr Anwar’s lawyer says he was stopped by police officers when he walked outside.
His lawyer, Sankara Nair, said no reason was given for the arrest, but it is assumed Anwar will be required to answer questions over sodomy allegations.
"The manner in which they surrounded our vehicle, it put a lot of fear and intimidation into us," Nair said.
The 60 year-old opposition leader had promised to report to police on Wednesday, but instead was surprised by the large convoy of police, some of whom were wearing balaclavas.
Mr Anwar has been has been in a tense stand-off with police since a former male aide accused him of sodomy two weeks ago.
The former deputy prime minister denies the allegations, which he says are aimed at ending his political comeback.
