KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (Bernama) -- Blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin was charged in the Magistrate's Court here today with defaming the deputy prime minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, in his sworn statement last month.
He also faces two more counts of defaming acting Colonel Abdul Aziz Buyong and his wife, Norhayati Hassan, in the same statement.
He is alleged to have committed the offences at Civil High Court 5, Kuala Lumpur Court Complex, at 10.25am on June 18.
Raja Petra refused to enter a plea but deputy public prosecutor Anselm Charles Fernandis said his action was tantamount to a not guilty plea on all charges.
He objected to this, saying repeatedly from the dock: "I refuse to respond on the grounds that the charges against me are both defective and 'mala fide' (in bad faith)."
He also said that he would sack his counsel, J. Chandra, if he agreed with the prosecution.
Magistrate Nazran Mohd Sham chastised him for speaking non-stop, saying: "I can't take down what you are saying. Give me a chance. If you don't respect me, it's okay but please respect the court".
Chandra applied to submit on the charges and Nazran fixed Aug 15 for mention.
Raja Petra is alleged to have defamed Rosmah, Abdul Aziz and Norhayati by making accusations in his sworn statement, which was made on June 18, knowing that the accusations would tarnish their good names.
Each charges under section 500 of the Penal Code carries a maximum two years jail or a fine, or both, on conviction.
Nazran allowed bail of RM2,000 with one surety on all the charges.
Raja Petra left the court at 3.50pm after his wife, Marina Lee Abdullah, posted bail.
Earlier, fernandis asked the court to fix bail at RM10,000 for all the charges but Chandra objected and asked that the amount be set at RM5,000.
Raja Petra rose to say that he did not want bail and the court granted a short break to enable Chandra to discuss the matter with his client.
When the court reconvened, Chandra asked for his client to be released on a personal bond without surety because he had been cooperating with the police and feared for his safety in jail.
Fernandis opposed the application.
