SHAH ALAM, July 5 (Bernama) -- The rally planned for Sunday at the Kelana Jaya Stadium in Petaling Jaya by the Coalition Against Inflation (Protes) has not been given a police permit, Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said Saturday.
He said the organisers heeded his advice to shift the venue from Padang Timur to the Kelana Jaya Stadium so as not to disrupt public order but the rally did not have a permit.
The rally is being held to protest the recent rise in fuel prices which has imposed a financial burden on the people.
Last Thursday, Khalid had advised the people to stay away from the rally and proposed to Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to disallow the rally.
He had said that if they still wanted to go ahead with the rally, it could be shifted to a more appropriate location such as the Shah Alam Stadium.
Meanwhile, the menteri besar said that the rally did not require a permit as it was going to be held in an enclosed area - a stadium.
However, he said, he had directed his officers to report on the situation at the rally from time to time to the Petaling Jaya police chief.
"We don't need to have a permit but of course we have to advise the police and I have done so.
"In fact, we will guide our officers to inform the (Petaling Jaya) OCPD about the situation. They are confined to the stadium and I think I am in agreement with the CPO (Chief Police Officer) that for the public interest we should not have the rally on the road or in an open place," he said after opening the conference of local councillors for the 2008/2009 session.
