10000 in anti-ISA march on 27/09/08 in Malaysia

About 10000 people are now marching from the Dataran Merdeka to the Hindu temple opposite the Puduraya bus terminal in solidarity against the Internal Security Act.

The event which started at 7.30pm is part of a candlelight vigil organised by Hindraf against the ISA which allows for detention without trial.

Tonight's function will include calls for the freedom of all ISA detainees especially prominent blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin and five Hindraf leaders who were nabbed in February.

The Anti-ISA Movement (AIM) is also holding a similar event tonight in downtown Kuala Lumpur.

The march caused a massive traffic jam along the narrow streets. Shouts of 'Mansuhkan ISA' (Abolish the ISA) were heard periodically along the way.

The crowd swelled to almost 10000 as more people joined the peaceful march.

Surprisingly, police presence was light throughout.

After a brief ceremony at the temple, the crowd started dispersing at 9pm with no untoward incidents reported.
