AS a democratically elected government, I think the BN has an obligation to explain to the people why the Internal Security Act (ISA) cannot be repealed or amended.
Most Malaysians have the perception that the ISA is aimed at curtailing legitimate dissenting views and the government is abusing it to detain its critics without giving them a fair trial.
It is all the more important not to abuse the ISA since it has been explained that the original intention and purpose of the ISA was to act firmly against communists, armed terrorists and subversive elements who conspire to topple the government unlawfully or by use of force.
Now, both sides of the political divide claim that their aim is to serve the people and to ensure that their reasonable wants are met and genuine wishes fulfilled.
It is the ruling government leaders’ responsibility to understand the people’s genuine concerns and accommodate their reasonable wishes.
