PAS offers mediation to resolve problems between Hindraf supporters and govt

PAS today offered to act as the mediator in resolving the problems which supporters of the outlawed Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) had with the government.

The offer was made by two leaders of the party, vice-president Datuk Husam Musa and Youth chief Salahuddin Ayub, who met with about 40 Hindraf supporters gathered in front of the Putrajaya police headquarters here.

The Hindraf supporters, who had gathered at 9 am, were believed to be relatives and friends of 10 Hindraf supporters being remanded for three days since Thursday after they were arrested for illegal assembly in front of the Prime Minister’s Office here at 3.30 pm last Thursday.

They had wanted to hand over a memorandum to the Prime Minister’s Office asking for the release of five Hindraf members detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) before Deepavali on Monday.

Salahuddin said the government was trying to avoid having discussions with the Hindraf supporters and PAS, therefore, wanted to help mediate.

Husam said the relatives were not allowed to meet the 10 Hindraf supporters held at the police headquarters here because, according to police, that was only allowed only on working days.

Relatives were only allowed to meet with detainees on weekends and public holidays in emergency cases, he added.

The two PAS leaders brought the relatives to the food court and bought them food and drinks and gave them RM5,000 as a Deepavali gift.
