Anwar: Who is Rais to question my position?

SHAH ALAM: Party Keadilan Rakyat’s de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today rapped Umno veteran Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim for questioning his position as opposition leader in parliament.

“He has no right to question my position because all consideration for that position is decided by the leaders of Pakatan Rakyat and not by Rais or even other Umno-Barisan National leaders," Anwar said.

Rais, who is also Information, Communications, and Culture Minister had reportedly urged Anwar to let go of his position not only as Opposition Leader but as a Member of Parliament following his sodomy trial.

Anwar said Rais’ authority is limited to government-owned Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) station and he had no authority to decide on other individuals' political positions.

"He questioned me, and I want to question him back. Is he qualified to be Information Minister? He wants full authority. Well he has it only over RTM," quipped Anwar.

"It is not for Rais to raise such a question. Let's leave it to other opposition leaders. Let them consider and decide," he told Suara Keadilan weekly after opening the Majlis Semarak Merakyatkan Ekonomi Selangor (MES) in Section 19 Shah Alam last night.

Anwar, who is also Selangor State Economic Advisor, attended the event with Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

More than 300 people from Tabung Anak Warisan Selangor (TAWAS), Skim Mesra Usia Emas (SMUE), Hadiah Anak Masuk Universiti and Tabung Pendidikan Anak-anak Pekerja Ladang received aid from the state government at the event.

Since its launch in June 2008, as many as 11,397 people have registered themselves for aid from the state government.
