KOTA KINABALU: Dusun community strongman and former federal deputy minister Datuk Kalakau Untol is leaving Barisan Nasional and throwing his support behind Pakatan Rakyat.
“I’ve given up hope on the present Federal government policies, “said the 55 year-old United Sabah Dusun Association president.
Kalakau, a former Senator and once the blue-eyed boy of the Kuala Lumpur administration, told a press conference that he believed in Pakatan Rakyat’s policies for Sabah and Sarawak adopted at the recent Pakatan convention.
He said he subscribed to the two-party system as it was the only way to bring about a change to Malaysia and Sabahans must support Pakatan Rakyat for a change at the federal level.
“Under a two party system, we can make a clear choice of who we want – PR or BN – and bring about the change in the next elections at the federal level, “ he said.
He said he was very encouraged by the PR charter where the coalition has agreed to adopt and implement the 20 Points for Sabah and 18 Points for Sarawak as agreed upon under the 1963 Malaysia Agreement
Without specifying whether he would join Parti Keadilan Rakyat on Feb 28 when PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim arrives here to attend a gathering in Tuaran, Kalakau said even though Sabah MPs have been raising numerous issues in parliament, the federal government has failed to find solutions.
“Sabah MPs in BN have been raising all the issues for 48 years but there has been no change.
“I don’t think the BN will ever bring any changes until the federal government is changed.” he said.
He said the independence of the judiciary has been compromised and corruption with cases such as the Altantuya, PKFZ, missing jet engines have been left unanswered.
On the illegal immigrants issue facing Sabah, he said he was encouraged by the PR assurance to set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry t0 solve the matter.
Kalakau who was UPKO Youth chief for 12 years until 2006, said he will relinquish his post as chairman of a subsidiary of Sabah Housing Development Board and as a director of the Sabah Economic Development Corporation following his decision to leave BN.
At the press conference, PKR supreme council member Ansari Abdullah acted as his legal adviser.
