PETALING JAYA: The arrest of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was designed to derail Pakatan Rakyat's plans to take over the government by Sept 16, Opposition leaders claimed.
The historic televised debate between Anwar and Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek on Tuesday night had produced overwhelming support for the former deputy prime minister, said PKR deputy president Syed Husin Ali.
"The arrest was made to thwart Anwar's plans to contest in a by-election, and to thwart our plans to take over the government by Sept 16," he said at a press conference at the PKR office here on Wednesday.
Anwar was arrested near his home earlier Wednesday. He had just finished giving a statement to the Anti Corruption Agency and was supposed to have been on his way to the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters to answer allegations of sodomy.
