KUALA LUMPUR, WED: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been arrested over an alleged sodomy report lodged against him by a former aide his, said his lawyer Sankara Nair.
According to Nair, Anwar, who was accompanied by another lawyer, R.Sivarasa, gave a statement pertaining to the case shortly after arriving at city police’s headquarters (IPPKL) at 1.10pm today.
“After this, the police will apply to the court for a remand order to hold Anwar for 24 hours or not more than 14 days to facilitate investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 377A of the Penal Code for alleged sodomy,” Nair told reporters outside the IPPKL.
Anwar’s former aide Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 23, had lodged a police report on June 28 alleging that the former deputy prime minister had sodomised him on June 26 at a condominium in Damansara here.
Pursuant to the report, Anwar, who denied the allegation, filed a defamation suit against the former Universiti Tenaga Nasional student for making false allegations.
Sankara said Anwar earlier had been arrested by a police team that came in three vehicles at 1pm, about 50 metres from his (Anwar’s) house in Segambut here, before being brought to IPKKL.
Sankara, who was with Anwar at the time, claimed that police did not have the proper documents when making the arrest.
Meanwhile, Anwar’s driver, Abdullah Sani Said, 49, said when the arrest was made, Anwar was heading home with two of his lawyers after giving a statement to the Anti-Corruption Agency in Putrajaya in connection with a report he had lodged against Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan about alleged fabrication of evidence concerning his court case in 1998.
Speaking to reporters while waiting outside IPKKL, Abdullah said some 20 police personnel in uniform stopped their car before informing that they wanted to arrest Anwar.
“When Datuk Seri (Anwar) asked if they brought arrest documents, the police said no,” said Abdullah, who has been in Anwar’s employ for 25 years.
