Malaysia Silent MPs will jump ship: Miri PKR chief

MIRI: Parti Keadilan Sarawak (PKR) is confident that members of parliament (MP) from the Barisan Nasional (BN) government in Sarawak will jump party on Sep 16, to join the opposition in forming a new government.

Miri PKR chairman Dr Teo Yu Kheng said for now these MPs are keeping mum until the actual day arrives.

He said one clear proof that showed that the MPs from the BN party in Sarawak were interested to jump ship was their refusal to sign the letter of loyalty to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi recently.

“PKR is confident that some Sarawak MPs will leave the BN government and join the opposition to form a new government.

Most of them are not happy with the administration of the central government for leaving Sarawak out from various aspects of development, compared to in Peninsular Malaysia,” he claimed at a press conference here yesterday.

He said he was also confident that some Sabah MPs were also prepared to join the opposition party on the stated date.

“Sept 16 is the date when Sarawak and Sabah joined Malaysia. It is a very significant date to both states,” he said.

Dr Teo also called on community leaders in Sarawak, especially those from the Dayak community, to help find ways to upgrade the living condition of their counterparts in the rural areas.

He said the high cost of living was burdening the Dayak community in the rural areas and that something had to be done to alleviate this hardship.

He said he was also worried by Dayaks who had chosen to move to the cities and still struggling to find firmer economic footing in their new area.

He said these rural-urban migrants must be helped so that they could contribute meaningfully to the progress of the state. According to him, in the past, their source of income used to be the timber companies. Now, there is no more timber and they are forced to move into the cities.
