KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 17, 2008) : Blogger Syed Azidi Syed Aziz, a.k.a. Sheih Kickdefella today called for the police to either charge him in court with sedition, or end investigations against him.
“Today was the end of the police bail given to me, so when I came today, I was either hoping to be charged in court or to be set free,” said Azidi, who had called on Malaysians to fly the Jalur Gemilang upside down to signify that the country was “in distress”
“I was told that as the investigations were still ongoing, I will not be charged yet,” he said, expressing disappointment that he would not have his day in court.
“The police have extended the bail, so I will have to report back on Nov 21,” said Azidi, who was called to the Commercial Crimes Investigation Unit here to be informed of the extension to his police bail.
“I am disappointed, as my hope to fight this case in court has yet to be achieved,” he said, adding that the trial will give him the chance to clear his name.
“(My presence in court) will give me the chance to clear my name through my actions in front of a judge, along with the evidence and facts,” said Azidi, who expressed belief in the judicial system.
“Whether I win or lose, I as a Malaysian believe in our system of justice, and our judicial system, and I will
receive the punishment if I am found guilty,” he said, adding that the case against him was politically motivated.
“When a blogger or journalist is arrested for an article, the evidence is all there on the blog or on the written materials. So, there is no reason to detain someone for three to four days,” said Azidi, adding that he saw the arrest as an “intimidation” attempt towards him and other bloggers.
He added that he felt that there were parties behind the scenes controlling the investigations against him.
“I know, from my conversations with the police and the investigating officer that they are forced to do the investigation. Therefore, I feel that the extension of my bail by one month is to curtail me from being free to blog,” said Azidi, who added that he was asked no questions about the case during the investigations by the police.
He told the press that he had yet to even see the police report made against him.
“I have requested many times to see the police report, but it was never given to me. They have told me that I will only have access to it once I am charged,” he added.
