Let people join Barisan directly, says PM

KUALA LUMPUR: The Prime Minister has suggested allowing people to become members of Barisan Nasional without joining any component party. The suggestion is part of reforms for the party.

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said this would make the party more multiracial and allow those who love Barisan to get closer to the party.

He was speaking at Gerakan’s 37th national election here on Saturday.

Abdullah said based on feedback he has received from the people, he has found that many supported Barisan but did not want to join the component parties although they want to interact with Barisan.

He suggests coming up with a mechanism and platform for them to do this and become direct members of Barisan.

This he said would allow Barisan to be inclusive and not exclusive.

Abdullah said what is important is that the members are of one heart and one purpose because they all love Malaysia.

Asked if the suggestion is a move towards Barisan becoming a single multiracial party, Abdullah said he would not like to predict what will happen in the future but if this experiment works well he will be very happy.

“I know for a fact that many people support Barisan and they want to be closer to the party, they want to interact with the leaders and they talk a lot about what Barisan must do. This will be an opportunity for them to participate in Barisan in a formal setting,” he said.

The inclusion of these people, he said, would allow the discussion of various national issues within Barisan.

To a question, Abdullah said that parties like PPP and Gerakan are trying to be more multiracial but at present they are still dominated by a certain race.
