Release Five Hindraf Leaders, Say Wanita Gerakan And Youth

KUALA LUMPUR: The Gerakan Youth and Wanita movements have repeated their calls on the government to review the Internal Security Act (ISA) so that it would not be exercised indiscriminately to detain members of the public.

The delegates meeting of both the Gerakan wings held separately here passed the resolution calling on the review.

Both the Gerakan wings also called on the government to release the five Hindraf leaders who were detained under the Act out of respect for the federal Constitution which upholds the individual's freedom and human rights.

The Wanita Gerakan also proposed that the government replaced the ISA with a Anti-Terrorism Act to check terrorism and ensure national security.

Meanwhile, the Gerakan Youth also called on the government to liberalise the education system at the school and tertiary levels based on meritocracy.

The movement proposed that the government provided aid whether in the form of funds, teaching personnel and other assistance without discriminating the type of the schools.

The Gerakan Youth also wanted the Higher Education Ministry to review the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU) to churn out students who were innovative, creative and proactive.

They also wanted the government to adopt a more efficient approach in tackling the inflation prevailing in the country to ease the burden borne by the low-income group.
