First Time In 10 Years, No Media Coverage Of MIC CWC Meet

KUALA LUMPUR: For the first time in nearly a decade, the MIC's monthly central working committee (CWC) meeting held Thursday (20 Nov) at the party headquarters, did not have media presence.

In a departure from the norm where a press conference is normally held after the CWC meeting, party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu decided not to take questions from the media.

Instead, he issued only a press statement touching on various issues effecting the Malaysian Indian community -- except the issue of succession and MIC politics.

The CWC meeting was supposed to have discussed the presidential election date and select the presidential election steering comnmittee.

Over the past month, MIC has been embroiled in speculation on who would succeed Samy Vellu who has served as party chief since 1979, following his announcement that he would step down as president after the party elections, expected to be held in September, next year.

Samy Vellu has also confirmed that he would defend his position at the party's presidential election, scheduled for March next year.

To date, former MIC vice-president Datuk M. Muthupalaniappan has announced his intention to wrest the position of MIC chief at the presidential elections.

Thursday afternoon, the MIC headquarters issued Samy Vellu's press statement after he had chaired the CWC meeting.
