What liberalisation Najib? Most Malaysians still don't know

KUALA LUMPUR: Just how well do Malaysians understand the recent economic liberalisation policies announced by the prime minister? Not very, according to a survey conducted by a local research company.

Merdeka Centre’s recent survey of 1,067 randomly selected registered voters aged 21 and above showed that only 36 per cent of those polled were aware of the liberalisation measures.

Of these, Chinese and Indians had a broader understanding of the policy with only 23 per cent of Malays polled aware of the measures.

Unsurprisingly, there is strong approval of the liberalisation policy from the non-Bumiputeras. This shows that there is a need for the policy to be explained better to the Malays.

Without awareness, there can be no buy-in.

Fifty-six per cent of those polled are confident that the liberalisation of the services sector will bring in more investments and job opportunities while 55 per cent feel that opening up the financial sector by allowing higher foreign ownership will also bring in more investment and job opportunities.
