Questioning what Najib Razak meant by the phrase "at all costs" Cost of people's and country's future? Cost of peace and security? For whom?”

Focus turns to Najib's 'at all costs' phrase

KUALA LUMPUR - The UMNO president and deputy president's speeches at the UMNO general assembly urging party members to defend Malays and Putrajaya "at all costs" have got the attention of veteran politician Dr Syed Husin Ali.

Questioning what Najib Razak meant by the phrase "at all costs", Syed Husin said his constant condemnation of Pakatan Rakyat during his speech showed "that they are frightened".

"At all cost? Cost of people's and country's future? Cost of peace and security? For whom?” asked the outgoing PKR deputy president.

Najib, in a spirited address to party delegates, vowed to defend Putrajaya at all cost, "even if our bodies are crushed and our lives lost".

"Whatever happens, we must defend Putrajaya," he said.

He also pulled out all brakes when condemning Pakatan Rakyat, and repeated his accusation that the opposition coalition was treacherous to the country, a favourite allegation often thrown at Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.

“Can we believe that Malaysia's success can be maintained by our rivals, who are trampling over each other for power? Can Malaysians trust those who have shown nothing but the desire to take the throne?

“Are we willing to hand our beloved Malaysia to the traitor of race and country?” he roused the audience.

On UMNO deputy president Muhyiddin Yasin's statement that Malay and Bumiputera 'special rights' had been enshrined in the Constitution, Syed Husin urged him to look up for the phrase 'special rights' in the Federal Constitution.

“What exists in Constitution is the Malay’s special position. Rights and position is different. Please read Constitution!” he said on Twitter.

Muhyiddin had warned all parties not to question Malay and Bumiputera special rights, saying it had already been clearly spelt out in the Federal Constitution and not subject to debate.

PKR's communication director Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad sarcastically responded on his Twitter account, suggesting that UMNO leaders were ignorant of the Constitution.

“They don't read the Constitution. They just attend BTN,” he said, referring to the government's National Civics Bureau (BTN) which has been riddled with allegations of racism by its course instructors and guest speakers.

In another development, Bukit Bendera member of parliament Liew Chin Tong took Najib to task for claiming that "there was strong online interest in the proposed Warisan Merdeka".

Najib had earlier twitted the remarks, even as a Facebook page called "1M Malaysians Reject 100-storey Mega Tower" had attracted more than 60,000 fans within four days.

“Sir, now I can see you have lost touch with online and public opinion,” said Liew. -
