The police report campaign is another effort to exert pressure to release the six party members detained under the EO.
PETALING JAYA: A total of 424 police reports were lodged nationwide by Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) members and supporters yesterday against the detention of six party members under the Emergency Ordinance.
This was part of a campaign organised by the party in its effort to exert pressure for the release of the six detainees. Other efforts include daily candlelight vigils, handing of memorandum to authorities and a signature drive.
According to campaign coordinator B Suresh Kumar, the police reports were made against Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ismail Omar and Deputy IGP, Khalid Abu Bakar.
“The number of reports made were from 1am yesterday. The campaign was to last only for a day but people are still making their police reports and we are encouraging them to keep lodging these reports,” he added.
Suresh said the reports noted the non-trial for the six EO detainees, false allegations against them of waging war against the King, concerns over their health status and their detention which was against universal human rights standards.
Thirty PSM members were arrested on June 26 and remanded on suspicion of waging war against the King. After the expiry of a seven-day remand period on July 2, the six were detained without trial under the EO.
PSM and many other quarters have voiced concerns over the health of the detainees, some of whom were already unwell before the detention. Sungai Siput MP Dr D Michael Jeyakumar is one of them and he has been admitted twice during this detention period for heart-related problems.
In a related development, one PAS supporter was arrested in Johor yesterday for wearing a Bersih T-shirt while accompanying a PSM supporter to make the police report.
Suresh Kumar said the PAS man, Syed Othman Syed Abdullah, was detained in Nusajaya police station but has been released on bail.
