KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Perkasa has said there is only a slim chance the weapons found together with Bersih T-shirts recently were planted by parties out to sabotage the election reform group.

“This is a very remote (possibility),” Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali said at Kelab Sultan Sulaiman today in response to a question from reporters.

He pointed out that to second-guess the police’s initial conclusions that the weapons had been stashed by Bersih supporters was an “insult” to the police and slammed the question as “unbecoming”.

“The police are professional. Planted or not, we don’t know. But the fact that police found (the weapons), it could be anybody,” he said.

“That’s why the police said when there’s a big crowd, anything can happen. Subversive elements, anti-nationals, communists, robbers can take advantage of the opportunity. So this is what we fear.”

Police revealed yesterday that they uncovered three weapons stashes near Sogo shopping complex which they said appear to be “a preparatory move” by Bersih supporters ahead of the July 9 rally.

The weapons comprise three machetes, one butcher’s knife, one handsaw, eight Molotov cocktails, two metal pipes and some 40 firecrackers. Eight surgical masks and four Bersih T-shirts were also seized.

The three packages were found hidden among flowerpots in front of The Ship restaurant in Pertama Kompleks, behind Sogo and beneath the staircase of Wisma Bumi Raya, all within 150 metres of each other.

Sogo is one of the three assembly points for the July 9 Bersih 2.0 rally, along with Dataran Merdeka and Kampung Baru Mosque.

Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh said the find suggests that Bersih supporters are planning to use the weapons during this weekend’s planned mammoth rally.

“This is what we see. From the facts of it, from the surface of it, it looks like [the weapons] will be used by them for the rally and the procession,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur contingent police headquarters here.

“You can see; the T-shirts are there. You can see Molotov cocktails have been prepared together with the weapons to be used.”

But Amar said the police were still “working all angles” to see who was responsible for planting the weapons.
