PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak has dismissed the Bersih 2.0 rally as being carried out by a small group of people.
Najib also praised those attending the National Cooperatives Day 2011 here because it showed that the people opposed the rally.
“It’s obvious that the thousands present (here today) are against the illegal rally planned by a section of our community.
“If there are people who want to hold the illegal rally, there are even more who are against their plan,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama, which did not state how many turned up for the event in the administrative capital.
While Najib downplayed the protest, politcal observers, opposition and Bersih leaders claimed that it is a success since some 15,000 people took to the streets despite all the obstacles.
Over the weeks, the premier’s administration has come under severe criticism for clamping down on the Bersih 2.0 rally to call for free and fair elections.
The police have arrested more than 600 people since this morning, including Bersih 2.0 chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan and several opposition leaders.
