Sarawak PKR believes the Bersih 2.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday was an eye-opener for Sarawakians.
The first “Bersih-sharing” session will be held here this Saturday where party officials will let the people know what actually happened during the Bersih rally on July 9.
PKR adviser Anwar Ibrahim will be attending the session at the Grand Continental hotel here.
“The aim is to get more people to understand and support the movement.
“Our state leaders and those arrested are also expected to attend and tell their side of the story as to what happened at the Bersih rally,” party information chief, See Chee How, said.
He invited the public to join the sessions. He also urged them to wear yellow in support of Bersih 2.0′s call for clean and fair elections.
Bersih, a non-political movement, is a coalition of 62 NGOs.
Said See: “We should wear yellow every Saturday until the demand for electoral changes for fair and just election is met.
“If the goal is not achieved, there may be a need to have ‘Bersih 3.0’. So we need the people’s support.”
“We feel that this Bersih movement is important, especially in view of the coming general election. We need to pressure (the Election Commission) for the reforms demanded by Bersih.”
Eye-opener
Describing Sarawak’s response during the rally as overwhelming, See, who is also the Batu Lintang State assemblyman, said that after Kuching, PKR would organise similar roadshows in Sibu, Miri and Bintulu.
The dates would be fixed later, he said.
“This is important for Sarawakians as some people still fear and see the negative side of the rally. The Bersih rally has really opened their eyes.
“We feel that the people of Sarawak no longer fear the Barisan Nasional and are ready to take part in this type of movement…
“So we are doing it big in Sarawak. We ask the public to come in yellow in order to show our solidarity,” he said.
On their roadshows, See said that since there is no more Bersih rally, there is no more excuse for the police to arrest people.
“Moreover, it will be held closed-door and there is no fear of arrest. The message is not just about Bersih. It is not the beginning of the movement or the end.
“It is ongoing process for reforms of the electoral process and political institutions and equal access to the mass media.
“Definitely, Bersih 3.00 may be held because I am doubtful EC is prepared to undertake electoral reforms,” he said.
See said that it has been proven that the EC, as an institution, is controlled and directed by the Barisan Nasional (BN) to be a tool of the government.
He said that judging by the EC’s attitude, it is not going to carry out any reforms at all.
See added that the EC had not said anything concrete to meet Bersih’s eight-point demand.
“It is not sincere,” he said.
