Wake up everyone. A defining moment has arrived for Malaysia

Written by Iskandar Dzulkarnain, Malaysia Chronicle

When will we ever learn, that this nation doesn’t belong to us. It is not our playground to do whatever we like with it. We borrowed it from our children, and we have to keep it intact for them. We are just passing by and we will be long gone, when our children inherits this nation from us. They too have to take care of it and be ready to hand it to our grandchildren one day.

July 9th is a defining moment in the history of this nation. Malaysians are beginning to see another side of our government which we have never seen before. Bersih 2.0 has brought out the ugly side of the government, and Malaysians are truly shocked at what they see.

Regardless of the crowd size, given the huge police lockdown over the entire city, when 2pm comes along all it requires is for someone to proudly wave the Bersih flag and it is over for the BN. A symbolic moment and an extremely poignant one for Malaysians here and all over the world. Five decades of bullying, systematic financial rape and arrogance will be given its come-uppance. The people will tell the BN in the most public way, please leave.

And we can promise you, more such moments will come if the BN does not listen. History is a powerful lesson and an example that the BN has yet to learn and must do so fast.

Looking after themselves

Our politicians have always taken us for granted. Even after 54 years they still think of us as lesser beings. They abused our faith in them, and instead of developing this nation, they created wealth for themselves at our expense. Once they have garnered our votes, they left us to the vultures. They seem to think that they are smarter than us, forgetting that as children once, we nurtured and fended for them, so that they could grow up to be an asset to the nation.

Come every election, they stoop and beg us for our votes, promising us all kinds of fairy tales. Once back in power, everything is conveniently forgotten, as they return to their old ways and continue to plunder the nation. We know they started off well and with good intentions. But greed got the better of them. Blinded with power and success, they have turned their backs on us. If we get out of line, they willingly arrest us and even detain us without trial.

Instead of working towards the betterment of the nation, they continue to hoodwink us with threats of racial conflicts and religious threats. They divided us so well, that now we are kept apart against our will. They continue to build castles for themselves, spending lavishly to satisfy their ever hungry thirst. They continue to champion race instead of racial unity.

If we try to protest, they are trigger-quick to deter us in any way humanly possible. Free-and-fair elections watchdog Bersih 2.0 is a coalition of 62 NGOs with a noble cause to reform the electoral system. They have been vehemently put down by our government. Their supporters were crucified, intimidated, arrested, charged and detained under draconian laws like the Internal Security Act.

The people were surprised at the retaliatory stand of the government towards the Bersih 2.0. And the venom with which BN carried out its vengeance on what is basically a desire by citizens to express themselves. It is strange when the the Pakatan Rakyat led by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim has thrown its full support behind the movement. By now, initial surprise at Prime Minister Najib Razak's shenanigans has turned into deep shock. By now, the people only have scorn for the Ruling Elite.

A laughing stock

Today, Malaysians have lost pride in their citizenship. Many feel ashamed to call themselves Malaysians! They rather pride themselves as Malays, Chinese or Indians. From young we were constantly brainwashed to be wary of other races, to distrust them and even to hate them. Even religion was being used as an effective tool to keep the races apart. Meanwhile, with all these subtle brainwashing, our children’s intellect has begun to suffer, and today some of our children’s intellect is well below that in the third world countries. What a sad episode!

Most Malaysians agree, if given a choice and if they were financially capable, they would have migrated. Patriotism is an alien word to most people, and so is civic mindedness. Our multiracial unity is in tatters, and Malaysians are unable to work along with each other.

The government even tried to classify a first and second class citizenship to divide the Races. First class citizens get to enjoy special benefits at the expense of the second class which amounts to apartheid. Most Bumiputra class citizens were told that they enjoyed Special Rights which turned out to be a big scam, as the UMNOputras (party warlords) diverted most of the special benefits among themselves, leaving only the crumbs for the masses.

The business community has contributed a large part to build this nation. Our many factories have earned us sizeable foreign exchange. Our Civil Service has kept this nation’s administration together. Our agricultural and mining sector has ensured that the country’s nutritional needs are met and our natural resources have enabled the nation to grow wealthier. Scientists, academicians and Professionals have played their part to ensure a civilized society.

But there is something missing.

Frightened rats

Malaysia could have become a much more developed nation. We could have enjoyed wider freedom and civil liberties, including a higher standard of living. Malaysians could have been united with everyone contributing their part to the nation. There could be long-lasting peace and harmony.

But no! Malaysia today is on the brink of destruction. It won’t be long now before a total collapse, caused largely by the ruling elite in UMNO, and another classic case of Greece bankruptcy befalls Malaysia.

Somehow, the administration of this nation has been hijacked by unscrupulous politicians out to make a fast buck. Bersih’s noble struggle has unwittingly cornered flushed out the very worst in the 5-decade-old BN government. Like frightened rats, with an uncanny fear of drowning, they are fighting back with every weapon in their arsenal.

The final showdown is today at 2pm. Finally, the people are going to show the government once and for all their true colours.
