Attending back-to-back functions since this morning, Najib made only passing reference to Bersih once during his speech during the National Co-operative Day 2011 at the Palace of Justice here.
“For those who want to have an illegal gathering, there are even more who are against them,” he said, referring to the 2,000 plus crowd there, prompting claps and cheers.
After the morning function, Najib attended the Flora Garden Festival here at 11 am and took a 20-minute tour around the gardens before departing for his next event in Kuala Terengganu — a prize-giving for a badminton and bowling competition for wives of Barisan Nasional assemblymen.
With Najib skipping the usual speech and press conference, his bodyguard warned reporters not to ask him any questions as he rode a buggy to tour the gardens.
The situation in KL was less serene, however, after riot police fired tear gas canisters at demonstrators attempting to converge on Stadium Merdeka.
So far, 540 people have been arrested in connection to the movement, which was declared illegal effective July 1.
Several Pakatan Rakyat leaders were also arrested at various locations across the city in their attempts to join the Bersih 2.0 rally for electoral reforms.
