A business group believes that the video is a 'political conspiracy' designed to split Pakatan Rakyat. But this, it says, has backfired.

KUALA LUMPUR: The police should investigate if there are hidden hands behind the sex video, which implicated Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.

In making the call, the Malaysian Indian Business Association (Miba) said that it believes the latest scandal was politically motivated.

“The entire episode was well-planned and executed; the timing of the video’s diclosure coincided with the Sarawak election,” its president P Sivakumar said.

He added that the plan would have been to drive a wedge between the Pakatan Rakyat parties, with the Islamic-based PAS being the main target.

Sivakumar also said that he agreed with former Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin that Malaysia should not be subjected to lewd politics.

“Furthermore, Anwar is a family man with children, this is just not fair,” he said, adding that the majority who viewed the clip agreed that it was not the opposition leader.

Sivakumar was certain that the video would have little or no impact on the Sarawak polls and that most Malaysians were weary of the constant sex allegations against Anwar.

“I agree with (DAP’s Klang MP) Charles Santiago, this is a ‘political conspiracy’, but it has surely backfired,” he said, adding that the police must now arrest the trio behind the video.

The video was exposed by former Malacca chief minister Rahim Tamby Chik, who was once snared in a sex scandal himself, businessman and Anwar’s former confidante Eskay Shazryl Abdullah and Perkasa’s Shuib Lazim.

Meanwhile, Sivakumar called on Pakatan, especially PKR, to put in place proper damage-control measures to handle such crises.

He said the people’s faith in the opposition pact was on the decline due to elected representatives jumping ship and intense infighting within PKR.

“Politics is a game of diversion, so some parties are diverting the people’s attention from the real major issues, the economy and so forth. So PKR must always be ready to counter this,” he added.
