KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 — The government should haul up those responsible for the prime-time broadcast of a second clip from the alleged Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim sex video on TV3, Lim Kit Siang has said.
The DAP parliamentary leader said it was clear the TV station had ignored public condemnation that arose after it aired the first sex video clip earlier this month.
“What a national shame and disgrace!” Lim (picture) said in a statement today.
He urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to take action against TV3 and the information, communications and culture minister for allowing “such grave public indecency and immorality” on air.
The Ipoh Timur MP also called on Najib to bring up the “sacrilege of public morals and decency” as top priority at the next Cabinet meeting to prevent it from recurring.
Lim said the prime minister should convene a roundtable conference comprising political parties and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to draw up “clear guidelines” to stop gutter politics in the media and restore decency to public life.
A 107-second clip of the sex video was leaked onto the Internet on April 3, two days after police confirmed that the video had not been doctored.
A second clip of the same length entitled “Papa Nurul Part II” surfaced online yesterday, showing further scenes from the video.
It shows a towel-clad man and a naked woman in a hotel room. The man first emerges from what looks like a toilet, dressed in nothing but a towel.
He places his clothes on the bed before passing something that resembles another towel to the naked woman, who takes it, rummages through a bag by the bedside, then walks to the toilet.
The slightly pot-bellied man is seen patting himself dry before donning his clothes: a white T-shirt, a pair of boxer shorts and slacks. He then leaves the room and the clip ends.
Lim today also took to task The Star for dedicating its front page to the clip, saying the focus should instead have been on the “historic visit” of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to Universiti Malaya yesterday.
The DAP stalwart pointed out that Wen, “the leader of the most important nation in the world”, had also failed to receive front-page mentions in mainstream newspapers like News Straits Times, Berita Harian and Utusan Malaysia.
Lim said the front-page coverage of the sex video likely gave Wen the impression that the Malaysian government was more concerned with sex scandals than working to improve racial unity or competitiveness.
“Wen Jiabao would have been completely horrified if during his short visit to Malaysia he had sighted the 8pm TV3 Prime News last night,” he said.
The full 21-minute sex video was first aired to senior editors and reporters at the prestigious Carcosa Seri Negara here on March 21 by a man who identified himself as “Datuk T”.
Shortly after the screening, it was revealed that “Datuk T” was a collective moniker for businessman Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, former Malacca Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik and then-Perkasa treasurer-general Datuk Shuib Lazim.
Rahim later told reporters he had exposed the alleged Anwar sex video to show that the opposition leader was not qualified to be prime minister.
