Umno worried by strong Malay participation in ISA protest, says PAS

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar described recent attempts by Umno leaders to label Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as traitor to the Malay race show that the Malay nationalist party was frightened by the high number of Malays at the recent anti-ISA rally.

“They keep saying 'the Malays have returned to Umno' but, on August 1, they saw 95 per cent of the anti-ISA protesters were Malays,” said Mahfuz at a press conference here, quoting media reports on the protest which was held to pressure the government into abolishing the ISA.

“So they panicked and started accusing the Malays of being exploited by other parties,” he added.

Mahfuz also said that it is irresponsible of Utusan Malaysia to incite racial hatred through its various commentaries.

“I beg Umno to stop playing racial politics, this is unhealthy,” he said.

Mahfuz added that it is Umno that has failed to uphold the seven commandments of the Malay Rulers made before Merdeka in order to protect the interest of the community.

The Rulers' message was highlighted by Raja Nazrin Shah last week in an attempt to show the importance of the monarchy.

Among the seven commandments are the position of Islam and the Malay language and the formation of the Malay Regiment.

“I thank Raja Nazrin for reminding us of the commandments, but let me say that Umno has violated all the commandments, what is left is the Malay Regiment,” said Mahfuz.
