Outraged in Kuala Lumpur
The judge in Anwar Ibrahim's trial has called for his defense. He has apparently been convinced that the prosecution has proven a 'prima facie'case against Anwar.

This despite a most unconvincing and dubious 'victim', government doctors and chemists who give evidence in direct contradiction of their own findings, the withholding of key pieces of evidence from the defense, and the clear involvements of Anwar's political enemies, including Prime Minister Najib Razak, in the case.

The judge's opinion is not shared by most Malaysians, who see the case as being one of political persecution, rather than the criminal prosecution that it is advertised to be.

The already tarnished reputation of Malaysia's judiciary, takes another knock, but it is of little concern to Malaysia's ruling BN. Their only aim is to hold on to power, at all costs.

Malaysia's supposedly independent institutions, the police, the judiciary, the AG's office, the Election Commision, have now made mockeries of themselves. They are perceived as pliant, willing tools of the BN in its increasingly desperate bid to cling on to power.

The BN wishes to destroy the opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, and to do that they know they must crush PKR. For PKR is the binding, multi-racial force that holds Pakatan together.

The BN is convinced that doing away with Anwar, in one way or the other, will cause PKR to self-destruct, and with it, the Pakatan coalition.

Here's the cavalry

They are wrong, for Dr Wan Azizah is more than capable of holding the fort.

PKR's top leadership now is composed of strong, capable individuals. Azmin Ali, a mathematician by training, has proven to be a capable, hands-on deputy, and a talented speaker in his own right.

Nurul Izzah, a PKR vice-president, has acquired celebrity status, is a fearless campaigner and a much sought-after speaker. She is now the subject of threats, possibly in an attempt to silence her. If so, the attempt has failed.

N Surendran is a long-time human rights lawyer and despite his youtful looks, a hardened veteran of many a confrontation with the authorities. He is viewed by some as a newcomer to politics, but in fact, has a powerful grasp of electoral politics and is a strong, experienced organizer.

Tian Chua, the MP for Batu, is a tireless worker, and an unafraid one. He has been bundled into prison many times by the BN, but has always emerged defiant.

Baru Bian, now proven in the Sarawak state elections, holds the fort in Sarawak. Chua Jui Meng, a former Minister, will prove a match for the BN in Johor's elections. And there are many more.

PKR has long ceased to be a one-man party. But the BN continues to think so, and so focuses on destroying Anwar as an individual, using most odious means. They will be disappointed to find, when they have finally incarcerated Anwar, that it is business as usual in PKR.

And they will have to deal with the inevitable backlash of jailing their chief political opponent, and the leader of the opposition.

The BN's foul calculations, will be proven very wrong, at the ballots. The people watch, a silent brooding mass, at these medieval machinations, at this uncivilized politics, they seeth, and they are outraged. As they were, three years ago, in 2008.

And the verdict they deliver, may yet put a long overdue fullstop to the BN's crude rule. - Malaysia Chronicle
