If the EC is serious about adopting free and fair elections, then it should find ways to verify the identities of the voters, according to Sabah DAP.

KOTA KINABALU: The Election Commission (EC) has been urged to introduce finger or thumbprint readers in all future elections in the country to prevent fraud.

Sabah DAP Kepayan branch chief Stephen Jacob Jimbangan said the EC should consider implementing the proposal in the coming general election to ensure clean and fair polls.

“If the EC is not going to adopt a fair and clean election system, then it will no longer be creditable and trustworthy,” he said.

Jimbangan said that in past elections the EC was always facing problems in verfying and identifying eligible voters.

In almost all the polls, there have been hundreds of allegations of fraud and existence of “phantom voters” who used fake identity cards (IC), ICs of others and even photostated copies of MyKad to cast votes.

“We found many (phantom voters) who voted many times in different streams at the same polling centre.

“We also found names of voters who had died a long time ago listed in the electoral rolls,” he said in a statement today.

Jimbangan said that finger or thumbprint readers would ensure that only genuine Malaysian citizens are allowed to cast votes in the election.

He said that such readers are readily available in the market at a low price and are commonly used in most banks.

“Why can’t the EC equip itself with the fingerprint readers in every polling centre to check voters and to screen out those using dubious MyKads?

“It is easy to install in the computers and comes with a program to verify the identity of a person by using his or her finger prints and other personal details in their MyKads,” Jimbangan added.
