The PAS leader keeps his cool even when the fan dangles dangerously above him. He also considers Anwar a brilliant man.

SEREMBAN: PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz managed to keep his cool even when the fan threatened to come crashing down on him.

The veteran leader had attended a fund raising dinner in Seremban, and was mobbed by journalists under a tent.

Several minutes into the press conference, the fan mounted inside the tent gave way. Dangling from a cable, the blades continued to spin.

While others scurried for shelter, Nik Aziz remained unfazed and did not budge from his chair. Party workers then held chairs and cushions above him to protect the PAS leader in case the cable snapped.

After a few minutes, the situation was brought under control.

‘Brilliant man’

Speaking to reporters earlier, Nik Aziz had commented on the controversies surrounding Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, asking why “Umno wanted to kill the political career of a brilliant man”.

He said Anwar had been accused of numerous misdeeds without solid proof.

“Anwar is a brilliant man, from Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s era to Pak Lah (Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) and now Najib (Tun Razak), the attacks have not stopped.

“Why does Umno want to kill his political career? If someone is stupid then he is stupid. But why cut off a brilliant man? In Islam, slander is a big sin,” he added.

As for the sex video implicating Anwar, the PAS leader said: “If his face is there, why don’t you just focus on his face.”

Quizzed on polls watchdog Bersih 2.0′s “Walk for Democracy” rally on July 9, Nik Aziz indicated his support, saying: “Not only July 9, even if it goes on till the 10th, 11th and 12th, it doesn’t matter.”

Nik Aziz added that elections in Malaysia were far from being free and fair.

“I have contested since 1967. Barisan Nasional uses government machinery and civil servants to campaign, they approve instant projects. This is not a proper election,” he said.

Later, Nik Aziz delievered a speech to some 3,000 people who had turned up for the event.

Among the Pakatan Rakyat leaders present were PAS vice president Mahfuz Omar, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, Negeri Sembilan PAS chief Zulkefly Mohamed Omar, Seremban MP John Fernandez, Telok Kemang MP Kamarul Baharin Abbas and Port Dickson state assemblyman M Ravi.
