Anwar predicts polls to called before August

KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 — Umno’s increasingly ultra-Malay stance as well as the emergence of a sex video aimed at discrediting Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) image are definite signs that general elections will be called very soon, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim

The PKR de facto leader believes that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will call for general elections before August this year. The Barisan Nasional (BN) controls the Dewan Rakyat with a simple majority.

“I would say anywhere before puasa (fasting month), before August. If not, immediately after fasting month,” Anwar told The Malaysian Insider in an exclusive interview recently.

Anwar said the timing of Barisan Nasional’s (BN) use of the mainstream media in highlighting a sex video allegedly featuring him was proof that national polls were not far off.

‘Look how they (BN) are managing the media, they look very desperate ...this is the final card.

“Can you imagine any country using porn as campaign material especially in a relatively conservative Muslim state...I have never seen this while I was in Umno,” Anwar told The Malaysian Insider.

An unedited sex video allegedly featuring Anwar was uploaded earlier today on YouTube, adding pressure on the opposition leader who has so far denied he is the man in the recording.

The video recording was divided into four parts and lasts approximately four minutes and 28 seconds.

The full 21-minute recording was first aired to reporters at the prestigious Carcosa Seri Negara hotel last month by a man who identified himself as “Datuk T”.

Shortly after the viewing, it was revealed that “Datuk T” was a moniker that collectively referred to businessman Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, former Malacca Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik and Perkasa treasurer-general Datuk Shuib Lazim.

During a March 24 press conference, Abdul Rahim said the video was exposed to show “a man who wants to be prime minister is not qualified.”

Besides that, Anwar also warned of Umno’s ultra-Malay stance as another sign that elections were, stressing that the Malay party was going through extreme lengths to get Malay votes.

“They have to resort to extreme racism...what else can they do?

“We don’t know what Najib believes in... Utusan speaks for 1 Melayu while NST for 1 Malaysia,” he said.

Most of the country’s mainstream media groups are controlled by Umno, MCA and MIC and they have begun running optimistic reports about the ruling federal coalition.

Umno owns and controls both the country’s largest media group, Media Prima Berhad (MPB) which owns English and Bahasa Malaysia newspapers, television and radio stations; and the Utusan Group, which publishes both Utusan Malaysia and the Kosmo tabloid. MCA now directly owns The Star and several radio stations and magazines while MIC owns the Tamil Nesan.

Utusan has urged the party to spearhead a “1 Melayu, 1 Bumi” movement to protect Malay unity.

It claimed that DAP was intent on unseating the country’s Malay political leadership.

Malay rights group Perkasa said it will fly the banner for the movement and launch a 1 Bumiputera campaign this weekend.

Analysts have said the Umno paper’s increasingly strident, pro-Malay tone is a sign the ruling Barisan Nasional’s (BN) senior party has written off support from the Chinese community and is banking on Malay votes to win in the coming 13th general election.

When asked to comment on the relationship between him and Najib, Anwar claimed that Najib had “harboured enmity” against him once the murder scandal of Altantuya Shariibuu went public.

“He (Najib) harbours enmity because of the Altantuya case...He thought that I initiated (it), that which is not true.

“I only took it up when Altantuya’s father came to see me, he had pleaded me to help redeem the honour of Altantuya,” explained Anwar.

“I had reservations, this involved my friend the then deputy prime minister...I told the father- I think you must really be certain of what you want. He said he was certain, then I took it up,” he added.

The Trial of Lim Guan Eng, Mahathir protected a rapist

Even if I fail and have to go to jail, I have no regrets. I have no regrets of going down fighting for the principles of truth and justice. And pursuit of human rights, especially women's rights. There can be no women's rights if women rape victims are considered equally responsible, and even detained, whilst the accused remain free. -- Lim Guan Eng

There are injustices in the law which are mind-boggling ... The lesson is clear - choose your rapist carefully ... As a woman, especially a Muslim woman, I am angry, disgusted and ashamed ... As a mother, I now have real fears for my daughter. What protection can we hope for our daughters if, in the interests of politics, a minor can so easily be sacrificed? -- Marina Mahathir, daughter of the Malaysian Prime Minister

Lim Guan Eng is a Malaysian opposition politician who spoke out against the rape of a schoolgirl by a government minister. For speaking out Lim Guan Eng was sentenced to three years imprisonment, the schoolgirl to three years 'protective custody', the minister has so far not been charged. [The Choice, Radio 4, BBC, May 1998]

No one familiar with the authoritarian regime that rules Malaysia with an iron rod will be surprised, though they may be shocked by the severity of the sentences.

Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Tamby Chik was Chief Minister of the State of Malacca. He raped a 15-year old schoolgirl. Because of the rape accusation and pending corruption charges he was forced to resign. To date, no charges have been brought against him for the rape, the corruption charges have been dropped.

The 15-year old schoolgirl was initially detained for 10 days without parental consent. She has subsequently been sentenced to 3 years 'protective custody' in a house for 'wayward girls'. At the subsequent trial of Lim Guan Eng the girl gave evidence that she had a sexual relationship with the minister (under Malaysian Law, under age sex constitutes Statutory Rape).

Lim Guan Eng raised the anomalies of the case, after the girl's grandmother (the girl's guardian), one of his constituents, brought the case to him and sought his help. On 28 February 1995, Lim Guan Eng was charged under the Sedition Act for prompting 'disaffection with the administration of justice in Malaysia'. On 17 March 1995, an additional charge was brought under the Printing Presses and Publications Act for 'maliciously printing' a pamphlet containing 'false information', specifically that he had used the term 'imprisoned victim' to describe the rape victim.

At his first trial in 1997, Lim Guan Eng was convicted on both counts and fined RM 15,000 (US $6,000). The State appealed to the Court of Appeal against the 'leniency' of the sentence. At a subsequent hearing before the Court of Appeal (1 April 1998), the sentence was increased to 3 years imprisonment. A consequence of the sentence is that Lim Guan Eng will be automatically barred as a member of parliament and is likely to be declared bankrupt.

The sentence is currently pending an appeal. Should the sentence on Lim Guan Eng be upheld and enforced by a higher court, Amnesty International will list him as a 'prisoner of conscience', for expressing his political views. If enforced, this will be the second time Lim Guan Eng has been imprisoned for expressing his political beliefs. In 1987, in a crackdown on government opponents and activists, he was imprisoned for 18 months without charge or trial.

The persecution of Lim Guan Eng is seen as not just an attempt by the government to silence a prominent critic, but also to serve as a warning to others. His constituents have been denied representation in parliament.

Freedom of expression and respect for democratic institutions and human rights does not exist in Malaysia. The Prime Minister justifies his iron rule as necessary to keep Malaysia on the path of economic success. The so called Malaysian economic miracle now lies in ruins. In a histrionic outburst, Mahathir bin Mohamad, desperate to blame others for his own shortcomings and failings, blamed foreign speculators and agents of foreign powers. In addition to the Draconian and repressive Sedition Act and Printing Presses and Publications Act, Malaysia also uses the Internal Security Act (which grants the power for indefinite detention without charge or trial) to silence critics.

December 1996, non-government organisations attempted to hold a forum to discuss abuses of police powers. The organisers of the forum were threatened with detention under the Internal Security Act, the forum has been suspended indefinitely.

UNMASKING THE MOTHER FUCKER ABDUL RAHIM THAMBY CHIK WHO RAPED A 15 YEAR OLD MALAY SCHOOL GIRL

Unwelcome sexual behaviour like physical contact

INVESTIGATION PAPERS ON SOI LEK’S SEX VIDEO TO BE SENT TO AGUPDATED @ 02:52:59 PM 23-03-2011

BACK IN 1994, THE THEN CHIEF MINISTER OF MALACCA, ABDUL RAHIM THAMBY CHIK, WAS REPORTED TO HAVE RAPED A 15-YEAR-OLD SCHOOLGIRL (UNDER MALAYSIAN LAW, SEX WITH A MINOR CONSTITUTES STATUTORY RAPE). LIM GUAN ENG, CURRENTLY THE CHIEF MINISTER OF PENANG AND THE THEN MP FOR KOTA MELAKA, SPOKE OUT AGAINST THE RAPE OF A MINOR AFTER THE GIRL’S GRANDMOTHER-CUM-GUARDIAN, WHO WAS ALSO LIM’S CONSTITUENT, TURNED TO HIM FOR HELP.

15

HOWEVER, FAR FROM DESERVING JUSTICE, BOTH LIM AND THE SCHOOLGIRL RECEIVED THEIR “DUES”. LIM WAS JAILED FOR THREE YEARS FOR SPEAKING UP AGAINST THE RAPE WHILE THE GIRL WAS GIVEN THREE YEARS “PROTECTIVE CUSTODY”. AS FOR RAHIM, BECAUSE OF THE RAPE AND PENDING CORRUPTION CHARGES, HE WAS FORCED TO RESIGN, AFTER A 12-YEAR STINT AS MALACCA’S CHIEF MINISTER.

BUT THE JUDICIARY SAW RAHIM ESCAPE PUNISHMENT FOR A CRIME COMMITTED; THIS CAME ABOUT AFTER THE PUBLIC PROSECUTOR WITHDREW THE CHARGE CITING LACK OF EVIDENCE. THE CORRUPTION CHARGES AGAINST RAHIM WERE ALSO DROPPED

KUALA LUMPUR, March 23 — PKR Sungai Petani MP Datuk Johari Abdul suggested today that businessman Datuk Shazryl Eskay was the mysterious “Datuk T”, and that former Malacca chief minister Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Tamby Chik is among those behind the screening of a sex video allegedly featuring Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Johari also accused the two men of attempting to entice him and other PKR MPs to defect after he had viewed the recording, which he said was of a person who only loosely resembled Anwar.
According to Johari, Abdul Rahim had also promised to bring him to see Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak after having viewed the sex video.

Anwar has already accused Najib of being directly involved with the screening of the sex video.
Rahim told me he wanted to take me to see the prime minister, and that he would take care of all my financial and security needs, should I agree to jump ship.

“He tried to convince me to bring more Keadilan MPs to see him and lead this group to leave PKR,” said Johari.

The PKR MP said he was brought by his uncle, former Umno senator Datuk Shuib Lazim, to Flamingo Hotel in Ampang here on Monday afternoon, just hours after reporters watched the same video and met the mysterious “Datuk T.”

Shuib is also treasurer of Malay rights group Perkasa.
Today, Johari told a press conference that the arrangements for the Monday screening of the sex video at the Carcosa Seri Negara had been made by Abdul Rahim’s special officer.
At Flamingo Hotel, Johari said he was brought to a room where he met Shazryl (right) and Abdul Rahim.

Johari went through extreme lengths to describe in detail the video he had watched.
The former Umno politician said he was convinced the man in the video was not Anwar, after comparing physical attributes of the two.

Johari described the man in the video as having broader shoulders, larger buttocks, and lighter skin tone compared to Anwar’s smaller physique and darker skin. He also said it was impossible to accurately identify the person as the cameras had not zoomed in on the man’s face.
“I am convinced that the person is not Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” stated Johari.

After watching the video, Johari said he was asked by Abdul Rahim to arrange more screenings for other PKR MPs.The lawmaker said he was also told by Shazryl that the latter was the primary protagonist behind the video.

“He told me that he was the main character, the person responsible for the video. He said he was the one who got hold of the video.“Eskay commented on how the person in the video removed the condom after the sex act… he said this was the same thing that happened to boss (Anwar) in 1998,” added Johari.

Intense pressure
Rais, the Jelebu MP, asked that the public not speculate on this allegation pending the outcome of the on-going investigation. However, the PKR-linked group, Malaysian Youth Solidarity, had lodged a police report over the allegation.
Two days after Rais denied the allegation, Najib, after intense pressure, broke his silence only to question the timing of this accusation. A sad day for Malaysia when its prime minister, instead of being troubled by such a serious allegation, chose to be nonchalant, questioning why was the issue raised only now.

But then Najib’s reaction leaves little room for surprise. Was he himself not the man besieged with accusations of having had an affair with a Mongolian translator, Altantuya Shaariibuu, who was later gunned down and her body blown to bits in a jungle at Puncak Alam in Shah Alam in October 2006?

A private detective in his statutory declaration alleged that Najib had “passed” Altantuya to his best friend Abdul Razak Baginda because the former knew he would become prime minister and wanted to avoid shame.

But shame it is because although there were numerous witnesses and evidence connecting Najib to the affair, he was never questioned or put on the witness stand. And like all good wives, Najib’s wife Rosmah Mansor too remained cool as a cucumber throughout the ordeal surrounding Najib and Altantuya.

Travesty of justice
Back in 1994, the then chief minister of Malacca, Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik, was reported to have raped a 15-year-old schoolgirl (under Malaysian law, sex with a minor constitutes statutory rape). Lim Guan Eng, currently the chief minister of Penang and the then MP for Kota Melaka, spoke out against the rape of a minor after the girl’s grandmother-cum-guardian, who was also Lim’s constituent, turned to him for help.

The corruption charges against Rahim were also dropped.

The travesty of justice is such that on Feb 28, 1995, Lim was thrown into jail after he was charged under the Sedition Act for prompting “disaffection with the administration of Malaysia”.
On March 17 the same year, he was slapped with another charge under the Printing Presses and Publications Act for “maliciously printing” a pamphlet containing “false information”, specifically that Lim had used the term “imprisoned victim” to describe the schoolgirl who was raped.
As a result of his trying to seek justice for the rape survivor, Lim was barred from holding public office for five years, making him ineligible to contest in the 2004 general election.

As for the underage rape survivor, she was initially detained for 10 years without parental consent. She was subsequently sentenced to three years “protective custody” in a house for “wayward girls”. During Lim’s trial, the girl gave evidence that she had sex with a minister.
With such lecherous politicians in our midst, the safety of girls and women – be they our sisters, daughters, mothers and foreign female workers – is at risk. There is no telling which politician is waiting to sexually assault the girls and women in this country. What is annoying is the fact that the crime is easily dismissed by threatening and buying the silence of the victim.
Two DVDs showing Dr. Chua Soi Lek at the time a prominent senior politician, and a woman engaging in various sexual antics are being widely circulated in Tangkak, Batu Pahat and on the internet. Chua Soi Lek has admitted he’s the man in the video and resigned from his position as health minister. He identified the woman simply as “a personal friend.”
Dr Chua Soi Lek and woman getting ready for annal sex why was he not arrested for anal sex bloody barisan musa hassan

The DVDs are believed to be closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings in a hotel suite. However, the hotel’s location and the date of the recording are not known.
The first DVD lasting 56 minutes has footage of four different camera angles of the hotel suite – the bed, living area, entrance to the bathroom and the main door. It purportedly shows Dr Chua Soi Lek and woman entering the room separately.
The second DVD lasting 44 minutes is said to show the couple engaged in sex acts on the bed.
Those who claim to have seen the two DVDs said they were convinced the man in the DVDs was the prominent politician based on his gait and mannerisms. The existence of the DVD was first reported in the Chinese dailies on Sunday while a Bahasa Malaysia daily reported about it.
News of the two DVDs are also being circulated widely on the Internet, adding to the controversy. Sources said the lurid DVDs were now difficult to obtain, as those holding them fear that the police would act against those distributing and being in possession of the DVDs.
The DVDs, with the name of the politician on them, were first reportedly left at various locations in Muar on Saturday for people to pick up. Some copies were also said to be distributed to shops in the town.
To deter those who wanna bag in some bucks from Chua Soi Lek video, the Malaysian policehas warned:
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said no police report had been lodged yet over the DVDs.
However, I urge the reporter with the newspaper that initially broke the story to come forward. We need to know how he came across the DVD,” he told TV3.
Bernama quoted Batu Pahat district chief Asst Comm Ibrahim Mohd Aris as advising those in possession of the DVDs to surrender them to the authorities.
He warned that anyone found in possession of the DVDs or caught distributing copies of them could be charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code and sentenced to three years’ jail or fined, or both.

Hindraf moves to get charge against 54 dropped

Named as defendants in the civil suit to be filed next month include PM Najib, AG Gani Patail and IGP Ismail Omar.

GEORGE TOWN: Hindraf Makkal Sakti will file a suit at the KL Hight Court next month to strike off a charge against 54 of its activists of ‘being members of an illegal society’.

It is seeking to obtain a declaration that the charge is ultra vires of Article 10(1)(c) of the Federal Constitution, which allows freedom of association.

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail and IGP Ismail Omar are to be named as defendants in the civil suit.

Hindraf legal advisor P Uthayakumar said the suit would also cite other constitutional grounds such as equality before the law to declare the charge as “null and void.”

“The charge against so many of us is obviously a government attempt to foil our cause to champion minority rights in the country.

“But we won’t be cowed by such criminal intimidation. We will fight on,” said Uthayakumar.

Hindraf national secretary P Ramesh and Human Rights Party (HRP) pro-tem information chief S Jayathas, were among those charged after a crackdown in March.

The charge was under the Societies Act 1966. Hindraf has thus far spent about RM111,000 to bail out all the activists pending hearing.

Nationwide fundraisers

The movement was declared an illegal organisation by the home ministry in late 2008. However, the government has no court declaration to this effect.

Dublin-based human rights movement, the International Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders or Frontline, stated that Malaysia had created a world record in being the first and only democracy to charge 54 human rights activists from a single organisation for the same allegation within the same period.

Apart from the absolute monarchy of Saudi Arabia, Frontline said that Malaysia is the only country in the world to have charged so many citizens for being members of a NGO.

The activists were charged following an aborted anti-racism march on Feb 20.

Meanwhile, Hindraf / HRP will organise a nationwide roadshow starting tomorrow in Parit Buntar to raise funds for the movements and finance the legal costs of the charged activists.

Tomorrow’s fundraiser in Parit Buntar will be followed in Ipoh, Kluang, Cameron Highlands, Sitiawan and Hutan Melintang.

“More fund raising dinners will be arranged soon to finance our rising costs,” said Uthayakumar, who is also HRP protem secretary-general.

Anwar: Najib & Rosmah berpolitik lucah

Who will be the next Prime Minister of Malaysia

Written by Jason Tan, Malaysia Chronicle

Anwar Ibrahim, the brightest talent in Umno during the 80s and 90s, is now the ruling party's Number One enemy. The bounty placed on his head by the Umno elite can be compared to that of fugitive terrorist Osama bin Laden in the Western world.

For most part of the last decade and especially now, we have witnessed all scales of conspiracies, fabrication, lies, manipulation, defamation and attacks against Anwar.

The ultimate aim of the Umno elite seems to centre and revolve only around him. And of course, how to end his political career - prematurely and unnaturally.

The reasons are simple, it is because Anwar poses the biggest threat to the Umno elite - both inside and outside the party. This may sound strange since Anwar has long left Umno, in fact, since 1998 when he was sacked and thrown into jail.

But with current crop of leaders so dismal and the Najib Razak-Muhyiddin Yassin combo a shaming flop, Umno grassroots cannot be faulted for wishing for the glory days when their party stood proud and tall.

RAHMAN flipped to NAMHAR

Optimism and hope were then bursting and Anwar's Wawasan 2020 set to sweep the country and community to new heights.

Now, there are only tired and sad plots that depend only on sex and smut to rivet public attention.

If either Muhyiddin or Najib were to speak only about their policies, they can expect to draw only yawns. Because no Malaysian could ever believe they could translate their rhetoric into performance. This is what happens with tremendous loss in credibility.

So no surprises that Najib and gang are doing all they can to keep the Umno door tightly shut against Anwar and also to demonize him to the Malay community at large.

There is this famous 'belief' that all the prime ministers in Malaysia are already pre-named by the alphabets in the first prime minister's name RAHMAN.

Tunku Abdul Rahman himself was the first alphabet, followed Abdul Razak, Hussein Onn, Mahathir Mohamad, Abdullah Badawi and Najib Razak. Who will be the next prime minister then?

The return of the big A

The curious within Umno and the Malay community have already flipped the code backwards NAMHAR. 'N' is for the current Najib. But who will the 'A' be?

Many Malays believe that it is Anwar.

Now, perhaps Malaysians and foreigners will better understand the inexplicable, even mad onslaught of sexual accusations against Anwar. From sodomy and homosexuality to sex with female prostitutes and promiscuity, Najib has thrown all that he has at his political arch enemy.

Such smut must be agony for Anwar and his family, but reassuring it is for Malaysians that trumped-up sex and lust are all that Najib can try to pin onto the Opposition Leader. Not corruption, embezzlement or sheer dishonesty.

Imagine the reverse if Anwar was PM - would a warehouse be sufficient to contain all the investigation files of corruption allegations against Najib and the Umno elite?

So it is that Najib - Malaysia's 6th prime minister - is running out of 'bullets'. Only jail and sudden 'accidents' are left.

Which will it be and what will happen next, only time can tell. But make no mistake, behind the PM are men of ruthlessness deep enough for the darkest deeds. The Umno elite will do what it has to do to cling on.

It is left to the Umno grassroots and all other Malaysians to put their foot down and topple them.

Meanwhile, despite the monumental pressure, the 63-year old Anwar is bearing up well. If anything, the past years have weathered him for unbearable turmoil.

It is astonishing that he is still standing and has not U-turned from any of his stated goals to bring about racial and economic equality and justice, where the priority goes to those with the greatest needs regardless of colour. - Malaysia Chronicle

The 3 most famous holy M'sians to have sworn on the Quran

Written by Iskandar Dzulkarnain, Malaysia Chronicle

Up to date, 3 personalities have sworn on the Quran in a public mosque to vouch for their innocence. All 3 were in the limelight for various reasons. While one was over a sodomy case, another was over a sex video while the third was to deny association with a murdered personality.

What stands out is, none of them had yet to go through the process of the law or had yet been prosecuted in court, so why did they saw fit to swear on the Quran?

In their frantic bid to prove their innocence to other Muslims and the General Public, they have taken this unusual step. It is left to the public to judge for themselves, whether they are guilty or innocent, and how they managed to get themselves stuck in this embarrassing mess. So the adage rings true: what you have sown, so shall you reap.

The first incident was over a Statutory Declaration, misunderstood by the public, containing allegations against the present Prime Minister, which led him to clear his name through a public swearing ceremony.

The second concerned a strong young man who cried rape by a grandfather with a bad back. Later after much protest, the charge was reduced to consensual sex. With so many loose ends left untied, like the presence of 5 other identified DNA in his nether regions, the court saw it fit to conclude that the one particular Male Y DNA found was that of Anwar’s.

The third was by the Datuk T trio, who screened a sex video of Anwar in their bid to discredit him, all for the love of a nation. They were so sure that Anwar would one day be the Leader of the Nation that they were willing to be prosecuted to save this nation from this devilish Anwar. They had insisted that Anwar was unfit to helm this nation by virtue of his unnatural tendencies as a sex crazed nymphomaniac. And Shazyrl has sworn on behalf of the other two, their total innocence in the sex video scandal.

No other fault than sex?

Malaysians are perplexed as to why the government seems so earnest in its bid to run down the Opposition Leader, why it has to resort to all kinds of sex allegations instead of using more conventional methods of corruption or other misdeeds by Anwar.

Is Anwar such an angel, without a bad record? Couldn’t anyone find any fault with Anwar other than his sexual misadventures? In the present situation, and given his flamboyant looks and charisma, Anwar can easily be passed off as the sexiest man in Malaysia, no?

What made these people chose to be associated with the Almighty God in their quest to proclaim innocence is beyond us, but we hope one day justice will prevail and the truth shall find them out.

Muslims also hope that these incidents will not be the prelude for more open proclamations of innocence through the swearing of the Koran, as it will make a mockery of our Religion and that of our legal institutions.(Courts of Law).

In the West it is a normal procedure to swear with the Bible in hand to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth in a court of law, but this system continues to be abused with the guilty ones still lying through their teeth.

It is up to the presiding judge and the jury to determine the truth. So if the guilty ones here hope to escape the court process, just because they have declared themselves innocent then they are really ignorant.

BN stands to lose

Until a Court of Law declares Anwar guilty of all the charges levelled against him, the Malaysian public will continue to be sceptical. He will still be presumed innocent. And the time taken to find him guilty has taken so long, that people are beginning to wonder whether all the charges were prefabricated.

With plenty of opportunities to prove themselves the perpetrators still come across to the public eye as shady characters, with the exception of the Prime Minister or so he believes or has been told by his public relations adviser APCO.

Malaysians sincerely, does not need to be bombarded by such garbage. Sexual trysts belong to the bedroom and not to be constantly aired for public consumption. The opposition is right to call on the public to make police reports in protest of such repulsive diatribe which is an embarrassment to the nation.

The Government must know that the continuation of this drama will not benefit BN in the long run, nor will it swing the way the electorate will vote.

Whether Anwar is innocent or guilty is left to the courts, and whether he goes to jail or go on to lead this nation, time and voters will tell.

Meanwhile, don’t turn this country into a circus of kangaroos with cheap entertainment and B Class actors. Malaysia deserves better. And Malaysians are indeed weary of this nonsense. Where is our sense of pride? - Malaysia Chronicle

What offence has Anwar committed? Why is he being hounded?

Written by P Ramakrishnan

The scandalous porno tape, used in desperation to implicate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim allegedly engaging in sex with a prostitute in order to turn the tide in favour of the Barisan Nasional during the Sarawak election, refuses to fade away even after the Sarawak election.

It was a widely publicised news item and – according to some reports – the tape was even distributed in the longhouses in Sarawak to disparage and demean Anwar and present the opposition in poor light to gain political mileage for BN.

The police declared that the tape was genuine. The people were made to feel that very soon the sordid episode would be unravelled and the person in the tape exposed.

The various statements in the public domain created the perception that it was Anwar in the porno tape. The police conveyed the impression that it was a matter of time before Anwar was exposed as the owner of the Omega watch stolen by the prostitute. The Omega watch seemed to be the most important missing link to establish Anwar’s identity.

But to their utter disappointment there was no record of the purchaser in Taiwan, where the watch was apparently bought. The missing link went missing and they were no nearer the truth.

Now they say ‘they will not hesitate to expose to the public if necessary “the performer” in the sex video who allegedly resembled opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.’

In other words, what they are saying is tantamount to the fact that they have identified “the performer” but they are not inclined to expose “the performer” unless it was necessary to do so.

The Malaysian public is rightly confused. What is meant by unless it was necessary? Why then did they go to such great length to find out the owner of the Omega watch? You took the trouble to trace the watch all the way to Taiwan.

What was the purpose? Wasn’t it to link “the performer” to the watch so that you can definitely identify “the performer” and expose him?

If it wasn’t necessary to identify “the performer” why is Anwar being harassed? He was called to give his statement a second time yesterday (28 April 2011). Unless you have irrefutable evidence that the character in the video is indeed Anwar, there was no necessity to ask him to report to Dang Wangi district police headquarters. Is it because they want to keep this shameful episode alive?

It is as though there is no other worthwhile issue in this country for the media to comment on and for our political leaders to discuss. Have we become so depraved that sex scandals have to hog the limelight and take up so much of the nation’s time and attention?

Malaysians have a right to be sceptical about the whole sordid affair. It is evident that there is a concerted effort to finish off Anwar in the interest of the Barisan Nasional. He is the only person standing in their way who can prevent the BN’s continued reign in Putrajaya. That being the case, would it not be logical to expose Anwar right now?

But why aren’t they doing it? Is it because “the performer” in the video is a pretender?! If it was Anwar, they would have gone to town with this information during the Sarawak election to disparage and destroy the opposition with one stroke. The print and electronic media and the blogs and websites would be gleefully swarmed with this news for days on end. But that is not happening!

But they are dragging their feet in this affair for far too long even though there doesn’t seem to be much hope of unearthing the truth. Why are they spending so much time with regard to Anwar when there is a simple, straightforward issue at their doorstep crying for a remedy?

The terrible Datuk Trio who were in possession of a pornography video should have been charged by now. The terrible Datuk Trio should be facing the music for screening a pornographic show to the public. With so much irrefutable evidence against the trio staring at and challenging the police, why is there so much foot-dragging? Why is there a reluctance to take action to punish those who screened a pornographic video? What is holding up the police and the Attorney-General?

Karlal Singh had rightly pointed out that prostitution is not an offence but using the premises for prostitution or living off the earnings of a prostitute is an offence. According to Karpal, “Whomsoever solicits or importunes for the purpose of prostitution or any immoral purpose in any place shall be punished with imprisonment…” If that is the law, where does Anwar fit into this? What offence is he guilty of?

A report has it that the police have located the place where the sex act took place and identified the prostitute. Why haven’t they taken action against the owner of the premises for allowing his place to be used for “immoral purpose”? Why haven’t they taken action against the person who procured the services of the prostitute?

The villains plotting to crucify Anwar have been identified; their involvement in this sordid affair has been established. Why are we not moving in on them?

Mahathir aka Perkasa, the man who destroyed the unity of Malaysians

Dr M says political divisions make Malays weak

UPDATED @ 09:17:22 PM 30-04-2011
April 30, 2011
Dr Mahathir told the Malays to unite under Barisan Nasional at the Perhimpunan Melayu Perkasa Kedah today, April 30, 2011.
ALOR STAR, April 30 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad told the Malays today they must unite under the Umno-dominated Barisan Nasional (BN) because division into three parties has made them weak.

The former prime minister said a general election, expected to be held within the year, was an important test for the Malays.

“If we are swayed by fairy tales then we will reject BN and vote for the opposition.

“These days, I find that the cry of ‘Hidup Melayu’ (long live the Malays) does not get a lot of support. Malays seem to be afraid of saying ‘Melayu’ in their own land,” he said to over 1,000 Malays in his birthplace.

“When we say ‘Melayu’ we will be called racist,” Dr Mahathir said at a gathering here dubbed Perhimpunan Melayu Perkasa Kedah.

Malaysia’s longest-serving prime minister said that in the past, the Malays were only loyal to their respective state Rulers and were easily controlled by other nations such as the Chinese and Siamese.

The Perkasa patron said that Umno had united the Malays and gained independence from the British.

However, PAS’s emergence split the Malays into two and caused the Malays to fight among themselves, he said.

Dr Mahathir said when Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim formed PKR after being sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998, it further divided the Malays into three groups.

“He doesn’t care about Malay unity, he just wants to be prime minister,” he said.

Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak had earlier today invited PAS to leave the opposition as it could not further Islam while partnering the DAP.

The prime minister’s invitation follows a call last weekend by Umno-owned daily Utusan Malaysia for a “1 Melayu, 1 Bumi” campaign to unite the Malays against what the newspaper said was racial politics by the DAP to stir up Chinese sentiment.

It also continues concerted efforts by Umno post-Election 2008 to get PAS to join forces in the name of Malay-Muslim unity.

The subject of unity talks between PAS and Umno dominated the 2009 PAS Muktamar, which saw a number of leaders keen on exploring talks with Umno emerging big winners.

Dr Mahathir told reporters later that it was good if PAS wanted to join BN “but when they joined before, they caused trouble. If they are sincere then it is okay.”

Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali said the Malay rights NGO supported the move even though he did not “think it would become reality.”

“This is because PAS does not think of Malay unity but only taking power and Putrajaya.”

Najib urges PAS to join BN, but PAS leaders slam the door on him

Written by Stan Lee, Malaysia Chronicle

Prime Minister Najib Razak urged PAS to dump the Pakatan Rakyat and join BN to foster Malay and Muslim unity, but he only managed to elicit expressions of exasperation and ridicule.

PAS leaders shook their heads in wonder at Najib's perceived aggression and told the Umno president not to be "thick-skinned". They pointed out that the way he was currently running Umno was a "slap in the face to the Malay community and an insult to Islam".

Indeed, the Umno elite in their bid to cling to power have unleashed a series of sex-based conspiracies that have shocked the conservative Malay community and angered Muslim leaders.

Najib in particular has gunned after Pakatan de-facto head Anwar Ibrahim, accusing him of sodomising a male personal aide and when that plot lost credibility, a sex video this time accusing Anwar of having sex with a prostitute was leaked to the public.

Anwar has denied the accusation and close-up shots show distinct differences in physique and facial features.

"If this is the strategy then I think it would backfire. As far as I am concerned if the intention is to drive a wedge between PAS and Pakatan, it is ineffective at its best. At the worst, for them that is, it will strengthen us even more," PAS MP for Kuala Selangor Dzulkefly Ahmad told Malaysia Chronicle.

"If you try to 'assassinate' someone let alone an Opposition Leader in such a despicable manner, it will not make us withdraw from Pakatan. We will defend the person involved because the tactics used to bring down someone like this is a vice especially if the person is continuously being made a target by BN and the media."

Bad motives

But Najib, who has often been accused of hearing what he wanted to hear, insisted on drilling into the Islamist party that it could not achieve its aims while partnering with DAP, one of the three components in the Pakatan coalition

PKR, DAP and PAS formed the Pakatan in 2008 following the landmark 2008 general election.

“Why play nice with DAP? Does DAP champion Islam?” Bernama reported Najib as saying in Kuala Terengganu today.

“(PAS president) Hadi Awang, enough of the DAP, leave the DAP, join BN.”

Some pundits believed Najib was also trying to stir up infighting in PAS, which is due to hold its annual congress and party polls in early June.

Umno has tried many times to get PAS to merge or join the coalition but has so far been rebuffed. Contrary to what has been reported in the government media, apart from Spiritual Adviser Nik Aziz Nik Mat, PAS president Hadi Awang too have bad memories of Umno.

PAS had joined BN briefly in 1971 at Umno's urging, but withdrew after ties soured.

Umno and the government are not behind the swearing by Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah yesterday, What a joke?

We believe you, Najib when you say that Umno and the government are not behind the swearing by Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah yesterday because it is every day in Malaysia that those out on police bail can call for press conferences or taunt the police and then have police protection to swear on the Quran in a mosque.

Last time it happened, was, oh gosh.... I can’t remember!

We believe you because every Ali, Gopal and Ah Chong can get Jawi officers to officiate at a swearing ceremony. The last time I checked, Jawi officials are employed by the government.

Yesterday, they facilitated Shazryl’s swearing on the Quran, which according to most Muslim religious experts is contrary to Islam. And they did it willingly, as a service to mankind.

But Mr Prime Minister, if you say that Umno and government are not involved, then we believe you.

We believe you, Mr Prime Minister, that Umno and the government are not involved in the swearing ceremony just like the government and Umno were not involved in when sodomy “victim” Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan swore on the Quran during the Permatang Pauh by-election.

Why shouldn’t we believe you, Mr Prime Minister?

It is every day that police and the authorities drag their feet in the so-called investigations and “allow” leakages of the porn video on YouTube and then feign ignorance. This, from a police force that locks up a man in order to get his DNA sample.

The fact of the matter is, there is only one master tape and police are clueless.

The Datuk Trio claim they are behind it but the police and Attorney-General’s Chambers are still “stumped”. Coincidentally, while the authorities are dragging their feet, the “Datuk T” trio are busy smearing muck on Anwar ibrahim and his family.

This is, of course, par for the course in Malaysian politics.

So yes, Mr Prime Minister, we believe you!

We would believe you more if you can focus on the economy and get it running, cut graft and give us what you promised when you took office — 1 Malaysia. People First. Performance Now.

All these shenanigans are affecting our faith a bit.

But, you know what, Mr Prime Minister, we still believe you!

Serangan paling teruk terhadap Anwar

Fazy Sahir | April 30, 2011

Beliau berkata, “mereka cuba alih pandangan rakyat. Kenapa nak serang habis-habisan Pakatan (Rakyat)? Sebab mereka tidak boleh jawab isu yang kita bawa.

“Bukan setakat saya sahaja yang diserang, malah Tok Guru Nik Aziz (Nik Mat), Lim Kit Siang juga diserang tapi saya pengerusi khas maka kena lebih teruk lagi.

“Mereka bermati-matian nak hancurkan kita. Islam sangatkah mereka? Kalau mereka benar-benar menghayati ajaran Islam, berhentilah dari merogol……zina…..rasuah,” tegas Anwar yang juga Ahli Parlimen Permatang Pauh.

Ujar beliau, “jangan lupa saya adalah bekas pemangku Perdana Menteri dan (pemangku) Presiden Umno. Nak sumpah kena berhenti minum arak dulu. Orang kalau nak sumpah jangan merogol lagi, baru boleh sumpah.

‘Orang pandang perut saya’

Berbincang soal moral, Anwar membidas Perdana Menteri Najib Tun Razak supaya menilai peribadi sendiri terlebih dahulu.

Katanya, “keluar video kedua…..saya manusia ada perasaan…..ada maruah. Saya ada Azizah, anak-anak dan cucu. Inikah cara nak lawan musuh politik. Ini soal moral.

“Najib……tengok diri saudara dulu…..kes rampas bini orang selesaikah?

Najib to Hadi: Leave DAP, join BN, most dirtiest PM ever we had

April 30, 2011

The prime minister has issued an invitation to the Islamic party to cross over to his side for the sake of race, religion and nation.

KUALA TERENGGANU: Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak today invited PAS to join the Barisan Nasional (BN) in efforts to champion the agenda on race, religion and the nation.

He said the time had come for PAS to break off from the DAP which had clearly not fought for the cause of Islam.

“Why be friendly with the DAP? Can the DAP champion the cause of Islam?

“Hadi (PAS president Hadi Awang), enough of the DAP, leave the DAP, join BN,” he said in his speech before an audience of about 15,000 at a gathering with the people in the Manir state constituency, at Kampung Pulau Bahagia, near here.

Also present were Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Said, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, Rural and Regional Development Minister Shafie Apdal, Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

Najib said the future of Malaysia was actually more secure under the leadership of the BN government and Umno.

“Umno was born in a palace and not on the street like PKR,” he said.

Najib said the people were now smart in evaluating the leadership that could actually champion the cause of the race, religion and country.

He also commented on the crisis currently faced by the PKR party leadership.

“During the Sarawak (state election) recently, even the occupants of the longhouse had asked about an Omega watch (belonging to Anwar Ibrahim).

“And yesterday, why prevent people who wanted to swear,” said Najib.

Najib is threatening Chinese by demanding Chinese to vote MCA or else no gov't posts

KUALA TERENGGANU, April 30 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today the Chinese community must choose to vote the MCA if they still wanted to represented in Putrajaya, or be left out.

Najib, who is also Umno and the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition’s chief, said its Chinese partner had sent out a clear message to voters that they cannot have it both ways.

“I see the MCA sending the message that the Chinese cannot support the opposition and at the same time expect strong representation in the government. They have to choose,” he was reported as saying by state news agency Bernama.

Najib (picture) was responding to MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek’s pledge earlier today that the Chinese party would not accept any post in the federal and state governments if it scored worse in the coming 13th general election.

Currently, the senior party in the BN only has 15 MPs and 31 state assemblymen from the last general election in 2008.

It had contested in 40 parliamentary seats and 90 state seats in GE12.

Dr Chua said the decision to quit all posts will be raised at the party’s AGM on October 2.

“We want to tell our members that to win back the confidence of voters, we have to improve,” he was reported saying at a press conference in Malacca today by The Star English daily after a party brainstorming camp there.

The MCA presidential council has also backed Dr Chua’s promise to give up all government posts if it fails to win votes from the Chinese community it is supposed to represent.

Dr Chua was also reported to have said the MCA would stay in BN even if its performance remained dismal.

The former health minister has come under repeated attacks from the opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR) bloc and his predecessor in the MCA, Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, in the last two weeks since the Sarawak state election.

Dr Chua has been challenged to stake the MCA’s government positions after controversially telling its Chinese coalition partner in Sarawak, SUPP, to drop all positions in the state Cabinet after a poor showing in the state polls.

However, the MCA and Umno-owned newspaper Utusan Malaysia have clashed over the latter’s call for a “1 Melayu, 1 Bumi” campaign to unite the Malays against the growing threat of Chinese political power.

Malaysian Media Row Casts Race Policy in Stark Light

The Wall Street Journal,

By JAMES HOOKWAY A row over the role of Malaysia's state-controlled newspapers and television networks is throwing back the curtain on how racial scare-mongering is becoming an increasingly common political tool in a country that presents itself as a beacon for tolerance and diversity.

Last September, shortly after being elected president of Malaysia's journalists' union, veteran reporter Hata Wahari issued a statement urging the country's newspapers to steer clear of publishing racially inflammatory articles.

Now Mr. Hata is on the brink of losing his job at one of Malaysia's most influential newspapers, embarrassing Prime Minister Najib Razak and potentially setting back his efforts to modernize Malaysia's resource-rich economy and unwind its race-based affirmative action policies.

Mr. Hata, 41 years old, says he thought his statement echoed Mr. Najib's "1 Malaysia" campaign to create a level playing field for all Malaysians, whether they are from the country's majority ethnic-Malay population or from its Chinese and Indian minorities.

"I asked the media to be less biased and be fair in its reporting to all parties," Mr. Hata said. "A few months earlier, the prime minister said the media should be free."

Mr. Hata's employers at Utusan Melayu Bhd., publisher of the Utusan Malaysia daily and owned by the main government party, the United Malays National Organization, took exception to Mr. Hata's remarks and suspended him from duty. On April 14 a disciplinary panel found Mr. Hata guilty of, among other things, revealing company secrets. He will find out whether he will be dismissed in the next few days.

Executives at the publishing company didn't respond to requests for comment.

At the same time, the newspaper is stepping up its "1 Malay" campaign to unite ethnic Malays against ethnic Chinese political groups that they accuse of plotting to win political power. A prominent Malay rights group called Perkasa has joined Utusan's "1 Malay" campaign and some influential ethnic Malay politicians have given their support, despite widespread consternation elsewhere in Malaysia. The controversy is becoming a significant political headache for the British-educated Mr. Najib. He has tried to distance himself from the ethnic Malay nationalists and, since taking over as premier in 2009, he has tried to woo the support of Malaysia's ethnic minorities by gradually rolling back a decades-old system of race-based preferences designed to help ethnic Malays catch up with their more prosperous compatriots. Malaysia's affirmative action program was introduced in the early 1970s and is one of the most extensive such programs in the world, providing ethnic Malays with discounts on homes, stakes in initial public offerings and better access to universities. In many ways, the policies have helped provide a degree of stability in this racially diverse nation of 28 million people.

But Mr. Najib argues that economic reforms will help lure more investment and propel Malaysia out of the ranks of the developing world's middle income countries and onto a higher growth path. He has already begun leveling the racial playing field in many key areas and has said he hopes his message will resonate with voters.

By law, Mr. Najib must call a national election by spring 2013, but many analysts say the polls could come earlier, and Mr. Najib has said he is considering the best time to call a vote.

Now, some analysts say the "1 Malay" campaign threatens to alienate the voters Mr. Najib has been trying to win back after many of them voted for opposition parties in the last national elections in 2008. Their shifting allegiance enabled opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to prevent the ruling National Front from taking a two-thirds majority in Malaysia's Parliament for the first time in years.

"The biggest problem for the government is that this campaign could backfire," says Bridget Welsh, an expert on Malaysian politics at the Singapore Management University. "It could bring the opposition closer together, especially in urban areas where race-based politics holds less sway."

Some analysts say the continuing trial of Mr. Anwar for allegedly breaking Malaysia's sodomy laws could also tighten opposition ranks, although there is also a risk that the alliance of Islamist and left-leaning groups could crack without the charismatic Mr. Anwar to hold it together. One of Mr. Anwar's former aides accused the opposition leader of sodomizing him in 2008—an allegation Mr. Anwar denies and describes as part of a political conspiracy to end his political career. The 63-year-old father of six was arrested on a similar charge in 1998, which he also denied, and his subsequent conviction was later overturned in 2004.

In the meantime, the snowballing pro-Malay campaign also indicates that some ethnic Malay hard-liners are giving up on the ruling coalition winning back ethnic Chinese and ethnic Indian voters, some analysts say. Instead, ethnic Malay activists appear to be focusing their efforts on creating a solid voting bloc to ensure the primacy of the National Front, which has ruled Malaysia since independence from Britain in 1957.

And that, economists say, could jeopardize Mr. Najib's efforts to transform Malaysia's economy. "It seems he could end up being boxed in by this racialist push," says Tim Condon, Asia economist with ING in Singapore.

Anwar: Umno stoking ‘culture of fear’ to win over Malays

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 — Utusan Malaysia’s fervent push for a “1 Melayu, 1 Bumi” movement is a telling sign that Umno is willing to pit the Malays against the Chinese just to secure the dominant community’s votes in rural areas, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has said.

Anwar accused Umno of creating a “culture of fear” by falsely painting the Chinese as eager to take over political control from the country’s Malay leadership, in order for them to secure maximum Malay votes before the upcoming general election.

He also accused Datuk Seri Najib Razak of endorsing and having approved of Umno’s increasingly ultra-Malay stance, even as the prime minister dismissed the “1 Melayu, 1 Bumi” movement as the personal opinion of an Utusan editor.

“Umno is using a culture of fear in creating this illusion of an enemy in the form of the Chinese... so that the Malays have to hang on to Umno. If this happens, I see the Malays as being hanged by Umno,” Anwar told The Malaysian Insider in an exclusive interview on Wednesday.

He said Umno through Utusan had misrepresented an “assertive” Chinese community as being political opportunists, and that this aggressive position was due to the Malay party’s eroding support base as well as failure to address national issues.

“Umno always has to create an enemy, either foreign or within the country... this shows the hypocrisy of Najib and his administration in trying to portray a liberal, moderate voice,” Anwar said.

“I have never accepted the assumption that Utusan or Umno is really serious or genuine in their effort to defend Malays; it is a desperate attempt to garner support.

“They have been given half a century to protect Malay interests but they have only protected family members, cronies,” he added.

The PKR de facto leader, once an Umno deputy president, charged that Najib was being a hypocrite for washing his hands off Utusan’s ultra-Malay push.

According to Anwar, Najib as Umno president would have a direct say as to the editorial approach of the Umno-owned daily.

“Utusan is under the direct control of the Umno president... I know this for a fact because the media is co-ordinated indirectly through the PM’s office and the Umno president has direct control

“To suggest that this is Utusan ploy and that he is committed to 1 Malaysia its hypocrisy because throughout history, the Umno president has a say in Utusan’s stories,” said the 63-year old politician.

Utusan Malaysia has been attacking the DAP since the April 16 Sarawak election, accusing the party of using racial sentiments to secure the Chinese community’s backing.

Pakatan Rakyat (PR) swept to victory in nearly all Chinese-majority seats, increasing its representation in the state assembly from seven to 15.

The Malay daily has urged Umno to spearhead a “1 Melayu, 1 Bumi” movement to protect Malay unity.

On Wednesday, Anwar said there was no harm in a Malay movement aimed at improving economic conditions for the community, but cautioned that such a movement must look at helping the majority of Malay Bumiputeras who are poor and be “needs-based.”

“There is nothing wrong with wanting to help your own race, community... affirmative action to help vast majority of Malay Bumiputeras who are poor and marginalised, I am all for that.

“We must recognise the fact that the vast majority of Malaysians who are poor are Malays and Bumiputeras. And we cannot ignore this, much more needs to be done... but at the same time we must be very pronounced in our policies to push for affirmative action programmes based on needs,” said the PR leader.

According to Anwar, Umno and the ruling coalition could not be trusted to lead any movement to help marginalised Malays as they were mired in corruption.

He cited Putrajaya’s questionable financial management which resulted in a staggering RM52 billion loss last year through its special Bumiputera equity scheme.

“The question is we did allocate 52 billion... what happened to the money? And is giving land to crony company solution to Malay problem? That’s where we differ.

“But if it means additional training, micro credit, massive forms of assistance to encourage new Malay Bumi entrepreneurship, I’m all for that ... we need to make sure it’s all trickling down,” said Anwar.

He also said that legitimate demands or requests of financial assistance from the Chinese, Indian, as well as other communities must be “fairly considered” as well.

“At the end of the day, it’s about needs... the poor who need help should get help,” Anwar told The Malaysian Insider.

The Umno-MCA relationship is on the rocks and the question now is when will they split.

Even rock solid marriages tend to flounder sometimes. But when it comes to marriages of convenience, what can one expect? The key word here is convenience.

The Chinese-based political party MCA is not convenient to Umno anymore. Even though Umno has made some politically correct statements about MCA, it would not hestitate to cut the links with MCA.

Umno would rather shore up its own race-based ideology rather than save the MCA sinking ship.

When MCA and Umno formalised their political marriage in 1953, it was an attempt to help each other before independence.

Marriage councillors are likely to agree that when two political parties gets “married” the inevitable will happen.

English novelist Henry Fielding who wrote “Tom Jones” once said: “There is one fool at least in every married couple.”

Right now the question is, how foolish the MCA must be feeling. In the early days of the Alliance, Umno, MCA and MIC promised to work together. The MCA agreed to accept Malay political dominance but in return sought assurances from Umno over the position and role of the Chinese community.

When Onn Jaafar’s proposal to open up Umno’s membership to non-Malays was rejected by party’s members and he left the party in 1951 to form a multiracial party, the Independence of Malaya Party (IMP), the role of MCA was cast in stone.

Instead of joining forces with IMP and embarking on a multiracial destiny, Tan Cheng Lock, who had initially agreed to join IMP, suddenly decided to place the fate of the Chinese with Umno led by Tunku Abdul Rahman.

In 1955, the Alliance captured 51 of the 52 Federal Legislative Council seats contested.

Anwar’s warning

The May 13 riots rocked their political alliance but the nation continued to see MCA supporting and upholding the Barisan Nasional (BN) concept.

In 1986, MCA had an acriminous relationship with Umno besides facing an internal leadership crisis.

On Nov 5 of the same year, Umno Youth issued a warning to MCA to leave BN over a resolution on the status of the various races in the country, which was passed by Selangor MCA.

Umno Youth leader Anwar Ibrahim said his Youth movement would respond to every statement made by MCA as refraining from doing so would be viewed as a sign of weakness.

“I regret to say that the MCA has stooped so low as to debate on issues that will only call for reactions from the Malays,” he said.

“If they (MCA) want to oppose, they should get out of the Barisan and oppose from outside,” Umno Youth exco member Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz told a press conference.

Umno Members of Parliament also called for the sacking of Lee Kim Sai from the Cabinet.

Lim was MCA deputy president then, holding the labour Cabinet portfolio and was also the Selangor MCA state chairman .

When the Umno-MCA row over the resolution was finally resolved at the Cabinet level, MCA president Dr Ling Liong Sik, who held the transport portfolio, said, “Husbands and wives also have their fair share of quarrels from time to time. Very often, the relationship gets closer after peaceful resolutions of such conflicts. Of course, such conflicts lead to divorce.”

One-sided marriage

Following the 1986 general election, Ling said: “Let us remind ourselves that the brilliant victory of the BN is the result of the collective efforts and the pooling of resources of all component parties.

“We have pulled our weight together. Our analysis showed that in about 42 of the 83 parliamentary seats won by Umno, the votes of the non-Malays were decisive. I believe, therefore, that the MCA also indirectly contributed to this great victory.”

But the Umno-MCA political marriage has always been one-sided. The MCA was forced to support many repressive laws which were passed by Parliament.

Now the Malaysian Chinese are thinking more clearly – both within and outside the MCA.

Can MCA deliver the Chinese votes to BN at the next general election? Recently messages have been making the rounds that MCA is intending to leave BN following Perkasa’s demand that MCA apologise for calling a public boycott of the Umno-controlled Utusan Malaysia newspaper.

Over the decades, a succession of MCA leaders have said the concept of power sharing is the most effective vehicle to safeguard the legitimate interests of all ethnic communities.

Is this concept relevant now? There is a sense of betrayal within MCA against Umno, and the Chinese community’s distrust of MCA is deepening.

The older Chinese generation is aware of the rapid erosion of the Chinese share in the economy and their effectiveness in mainstream national policy-making despite having MCA representatives in the Cabinet.

Dr Chua Soi Lek in a press interview in 2008 said: “The new president must be able to articulate the frustrations of the Chinese community, its needs and the three core issues that I listed – politics, economics and education.”

“The Chinese know that we (MCA) are not the know-all: we do not have a magical wand that can solve all problems. But if you keep quiet in the name of sensitivity, then people cannot accept MCA anymore,” Chua said when asked whether the new MCA president must be seen to be able to stand up to Umno.

Blaming Abdullah

Shortly after the 2008 general election, a confidential MCA post-mortem report squarely blamed Umno leadership under former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for the poor electoral performance of the party.

MCA managed to garner only 819,924 popular votes in the 40 parliamentary seats it contested or capturing only 15 or 37.5% of the seats. This was even worse off than in 1969 when it won 13 out of 33 seats or 39.4% of the parliamentary seats.

MCA said the Malaysian public, particularly the Chinese community, was angered by Abdullah’s weak leadership, corruption, cronyism, abuses and excesses of the BN administration, rising crimes and safety issues, curbs on religious freedom and a host of other economic issues.

The report acknowledged the 12th general election was a victory for the opposition.

“The victory was not won on multiracialism but on a common platform of social justice, a common thread in socialist ideology (DAP) and Islamism/political Islam (PAS),” it said.

There is a growing consensus that MCA has lost its hold on the Chinese community. It has virtually lost all electoral seats with predominantly Chinese voters.

Now is the era of change. There is a awakening against race-based parties and this is likely to see a divorce in the Umno-MCA relationship.
