Nine Hindraf Supporters Detained

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- Nine supporters of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf), including two women, were detained Saturday for creating a pandemonium at a temple here.

Penang police chief Datuk Ayub Yaakob said the supporters, who are between 20 and 30 years old, were detained at about 6.30pm.

"They were detained for holding an illegal gathering," he said when met by Bernama at the Seberang Perai Tengah police headquarters Saturday.

However, he declined to elaborate on the incident.

About 200 people had gathered at the temple since 2pm to hold prayers seeking the release of their leaders - P. Uthayakumar, M. Manoharan, R. Kengadharan, V. Ganabatirau and T. Vasanthakumar, who are detained at the Kamunting Detention Camp in Perak.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who was in the area, dropped by at the Karumariammah Temple, Seberang Jaya at about 5.30pm and spoke to the crowd for about five minutes after receiving a memorandum handed by a Hindraf representative.
