Irshad Manji's publisher files judicial review

The publisher of Irshad Manji's translation of Allah, Liberty & Love: The courage to reconcile faith & freedom into Bahasa Melayu filed a judicial review today to challenge the raid carried out by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais).

ZI Publications Sdn Bhd and its director Mohd Ezra Mohd Zaid filed the application with the Appellate and Special Powers Division of the High Court registrar in Kuala Lumpur through M/s Bashir & Co.

ZI Publications named Jais, its director-general, Selangor Religious chief enforcement officer, Selangor Syariah chief prosecutor, Selangor government and the government of Malaysia as the respondents.

The plaintiffs sought to null the raid and seizure of 180 books on May 29 from ZI Publications' premises in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, and for the books to be returned.

It also sought to null Mohd Ezra's arrest on the same day and subsequent prosecution.

The application states that the Bahasa Melayu version was a translation from an English publication by Random House Canada, with the same title.

It further claimed that the English version had been in the market locally since June last year.
