PR Perak joins in call for royal commission probe

IPOH: In the aftershock of the sudden demise of Teoh Beng Hock, political secretary to a Selangor state executive councillor, the Perak Pakatan Rakyat has called for the formation of a Royal Commission to investigate his death.

Former mentri besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said today that there was something fishy about Teoh’s passing and even held Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz responsible.

“Why should he be detained by the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission for so many hours when he is merely a witness and not a suspect. Why did they need to keep him overnight? There must be a reason and they should explain,” he said in press conference here today.

Nizar added that Teoh could not have committed suicide as the latter had marriage plans this week.

“We want the MACC to come clean on this matter,” he said.

To mourn Teoh’s untimely passing Perak DAP chief Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham said, the party would be holding a series of candlelight vigils over the next few days.

“We are doing this to show MACC our protest in the matter. We want them to explain to us why Teoh was kept in their clutches for so long. We want accountability,” he said.

After the press conference, Ngeh and a team of other state PR leaders led a march from the Perak DAP headquarters to the state MACC office about 500m away.

They delivered a memorandum to the MACC urging the body to give an explanation. Meanwhile, a candlelight vigil for Teoh will be held tonight at 8pm, in front of the Sungai Buluh DAP branch office in Sungai Siput and another will be held at the same time tomorrow in front of the state’s MACC office.
