It is still Anwar for PM, says Guan Eng

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 — DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng insisted today that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be the prime minister if Pakatan Rakyat (PR) takes over Putrajaya.

“We’ve already said so many times. It will be Anwar Ibrahim.

“We have said who is going to be prime minister when PR wins power. So it is very, very clear,” the Penang chief minister told reporters in George Town, according to a voice recording.

Opposition Leader Anwar is facing the prospect of a possible conviction for the second sodomy charge in his career.

Anwar has said that with support shown by protestors in the Bersih 2.0 rally, the opposition would still make gains even if he is convicted for sodomy, adding the trial outcome was already a “foregone conclusion”.

“He’ll still be there even if he goes to jail. It’s still Anwar. That has been decided by all three parties,” Lim said.

Anwar, who was once next in line for the prime minister’s post, was toppled from power when he was first charged with sodomy and corruption in 1998.

The then deputy prime minister was sacked from the Cabinet and was later convicted and jailed for both offences.

He was freed in September 2004 and resurrecting his career by winning his old Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat in a 2008 by-election. He also led the opposition coalition to a historic sweep of five states and 82 parliamentary seats in Election 2008.
