Another Chief to lead Indians

KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 – It’s official – former Hindraf founder and lawyer P. Uthayakumar is forming a political party called Human Rights Party Malaysia (HRP) that will be launched at the Hokkien Hall in Klang on Sunday.

In a statement, Uthayakumar, who was recently released from ISA detention, said HRP would be a multi-racial party that would fight for the 18-point demands of the Hindraf/Makkal Sakthi movement.

In particular, HRP, or Paham in the national language, will defend the constitution especially Article 8 (Equality before the law), Article 12 (1) (b) (no discrimination among citizens) and Article 153(1) (legitimate interests of other communities).

“Our main thrust is to put Malaysian Indians back onto the national mainstream development of Malaysia after 52 years of neglect,” he said in a statement signing off as HRP pro tem secretary general.

He said the new party would also work for all communities who suffer from human rights violations, but it would particularly focus on Malaysian Indians.

“They get the least attention, not only from the ruling Umno regime but also from the Opposition parties PKR, DAP, PAS, NGO’s and civil society,” he said.

“We would also struggle against all forms of racism and racial discrimination by the Umno-led government of Malaysia,” he said.

“We hereby invite the multi–racial people and leaders of Malaysia to join us in undoing the injustices meted out to all marginalised communities in particular the Malaysian Indians,” he added.

He said his party and its leaders are keen to fight for justice and not just win in elections “at the expense” of the people and their rights.

“We are the first and only Indian based multi-racial political party which is in the opposition and which is not aligned to Umno/BN,” he said.

Uthayakumar will also be launching a book he has authored, entitled “Malaysian Indian political empowerment strategy – the way forward” which he says was written while he was under ISA detention for over a year.

He said Hindraf Makkal Sakthi would remain apolitical and would continue to be a forceful and vocal NGO under the leadership of it’s chairman P. Waythamoorthy.

With his announcement, there are now three organisations which have emerged out of the banned Hindraf movement — the Makkal Sakthi Malaysia Party led by former Hindraf national co-coordinator R.S. Thanenthiran and a yet unnamed NGO to be launched by Hindraf leader and former ISA detainee K. Vasantha Kumar later this month.
