DAP’s chance to show readiness to rule

A party stalwart says it’s time to go beyond merely condemning Barisan Nasional.

GEORGE TOWN: DAP’s national conference in Shah Alam this Sunday is an excellent opportunity for the party to demonstrate to Malaysians that it is ready for Putrajaya, according to Kota Alam Shah state assemblyman M Manoharan.

He urged party leaders and conference delegates to show that DAP had transformed from an opposition-minded to a people-orientated ruling party and said they should address such national issues as those affecting education, public transportation, public health, national security and international relations.

He called on them to raise “constructive proposals and recommendations” for the improvement of the nation’s governance.

Manoharan, a former Selangor DAP chief, told FMT that he felt the party must go beyond just condemning Barisan Nasional for its bad governance, excesses and sins.

“We should use the convention as the platform to advertise DAP as a ruling party in waiting,” he said.

“We should moot our own fresh ideas and suggestions to improve the country’s governance on various fronts. We should show that DAP is ready to govern the country.”

The conference will be from 10am to 5pm at Dewan Jubli Perak in the Selangor capital.

Manoharan called on delegates to engage in “mature, constructive and intellectual debates” on university intakes, the quality of education, the use of English in the teaching of science and mathematics and the controversy surrounding the use of the allegedly racist-tinged Interlok as a literature text in public schools.

He also suggested the following topics for debate: the statelessness of many people who have legitimate claims to Malaysian citizenship, military overspending, police efforts to make Malaysia crime free, local government elections, and the rapid commercialisation of the public health sector.

“We should make constructive recommendations on how to dismantle the country’s current racist governance,” he added.

“We should present the DAP as an ideal, reliable, trustworthy and progressive alternative government for all people.”
