EC rejects Mimos as verification body, says Nurul Izzah

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 — Government technology adviser Mimos Berhad will not be used to verify the authenticity of the electoral rolls contrary to the suggestion by a parliamentary select committee (PSC), PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said today.

Early last month, the PSC on electoral reforms called for an immediate audit of the rolls and suggested that Mimos go through the electoral rolls and verify the authenticity of entries as part of efforts to clean up the system.

“We were just informed by the director of the Election Commission that Mimos will not be used to verify the authenticity of entries in the electoral roll,” Nurul Izzah (picture) told a press conference here.

“This suggestion by the PSC for Mimos as a verification body has been rejected,” she said.

However, the Lembah Pantai MP said no reason was given as to why Mimos was rejected by the EC.

She said the EC’s central database “is worrying” as it was not updated and had many weaknesses including “many problems with early and postal voting”.

“Although in Parliament we have understood there will no longer be postal voting but unfortunately it is still being carried out. The difference is the percentage of early voters. However, the mechanism is still unclear,” she said.

“We want the mechanism to abide by the law and that only those qualified can vote earlier. To this point, there is no guarantee,” she added, pointing out that early and postal voters should not be exempted from the use of indelible ink.

Nurul Izzah said her constituency had 133 doubtful names that are registered but are not listed in the EC database online, adding that 68 names have been found to be registered in two constituencies.

However, she said the EC has vowed to look into these discrepancies.

“Although the objection period is end of January, the (EC) director said he’ll look into it,” she said.
