Khir suspended a year, four other BN lawmakers get six months

SHAH ALAM, July 15 —Pakatan Rakyat (PR) lawmakers unanimously voted to support the recommendation of the Selangor State Assembly Rights and Privileges Committee to suspend Datuk Seri Mohd Khir Toyo and four other Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen.

All 20 BN state lawmakers including Khir staged a walkout before lunch and none were in the assembly when the vote was taken.

Khir walked out after lashing out at the state government for using him as a scapegoat to hide its own inadequacies.

The former mentri besar was given first right to debate the motion to suspend him and four other Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen as recommended by the House Rights and Privileges Committee.

Khir said the whole process was a farce and that the state was trying to silence him before staging a walkout with other BN state assemblymen even before the issue was put to a vote.

He was facing a year’s suspension for failing to attend a public inquiry by a state government watchdog which was investigating the misuse of state funds by the Wives of Selangor Elected Representative Welfare Organisation (Balkis).

The Rights and Privileges Committee has recommended that he be suspended for one year while the four other state lawmakers may be suspended for six months for criticising the Special Select Committee for Competency, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat).
